Don’t Look Back / David Allyn

I’d been looking for a excellent condition copy of this album for a long time, and finally I found it at a local shop the other day. It only costed 840 YEN.

(Xanadu 101)

David Allyn is a talented male vocalist whose early career included a featured vocalist in Jack Teagarden Orchestra as well as Boyd Raeburn Orchestra in the 1940s. Then he stepped into the solo career and left several leader albums, but due to a drug addict his musical career was suspended until mid-1970s.

This album, released from Xanadu label (established by Don Schlitten who was one of the important key persons of Prestige label in the 1960s), was his return to the scene.

Unfortunately, this copy doesn’t seem to be the very first pressing in 1975 – both the back cover and the label have “Manufactured and Distributed by Cream Records, Inc., Los Angeles, California” printed, which may indicate that this copy was a second pressing copy released in the late 1970s. Furthermore, the label says MONO, while the contents are (of course) included in stereo . . . it’s a strange mystery indeed.

However, the greatness of this album really blow such “collectors’ trivia”. David Allyn sings from the bottom of his heart, being backed only with Barry Harris on piano. His singing is so emotional, and at the same time the mood has a shade of nuances, which is so great to listen to. The duo format – male vocal with piano (playing “Waltz For Debby”) – reminds us of another famous album, “The Tony Bennett – Bill Evans Album” (Fantasy F-9489), but at least in my humble opinion, David Allyn’s album surpasses Bennett=Evans so far.

The most significant difference between Bennett=Evans and Allyn=Harris would be the power-balance between vocal and piano. In the former case, Evans plays so spontaneously with Bennett’s singing – piano and vocal are on an very equal footing. On the other hand in the latter case, Harris’ piano gently backs up with Allyn’s emotional singing, sounding as if the vocalist stands in the spotlight (just like the cover photo).
