We’re Only In It For The Money

On tennis (singles) matches last Friday morning (my birthday BTW), I could win against two opponents at 6-1 and 6-0 respectively which was a good success. This would be probably because I listened to the Frank Zappa’s “Mystery Disc” CD on my way to the tennis court 🙂

Burnt Weeny Sandwich」、「Studio Tan」あるいは「London Symphony Orchestra」といった辺りが一番好みの私ですが、上のジャケットの「We’re Only In It For The Money」は、ファンの間で酷評されまくった 1984年リミックスバージョンと「Lumpy Gravy」が 2 in 1 で収録された 1991年版 CD です。

Among dozens of his albums, I love such albums like “Burnt Weeny Sandwich”, “Studio Tan” and “London Symphony Orchestra”. The above cover scan of “We’re Only In It For The Money” is a famous 1991 2-in-1 CD version including 1984 remix version (coupled with its sister album “Lumpy Gravy”) – being famous for too much remixing which made so many Zappa freaks disappointed. However, this version was my first acquaintance with the album, and I still think this remixed version is not so bad as many people claim.

「Freak Out!」

This album, “We’re Only In It For The Money”, for the musical genius Frank Zappa of the 20th century, was definitely one of the most important milestones among 30 years of his entire career – the moment when diversity of various musical essence in his mind and his body turned out to being “ugly beauty” – the moment when his polyhedral artistry came to bloom in every track as well as the entire album (on such early albums as “Freak Out!” and “Absolutely Free”, his polyhedralism appeared distinctively in every track apiece). This album, as well as its sister album “Lumpy Gravy”, was such an important milestone, I believe.

Unlike most Zappa fans, I came to give it a listen to the original mix many years after I firstly bought the remixed CD version. This LP is what is called “heavily censored version”, with dead wax matrix ending with REV.

(1) “Who Needs The Peace Corps?” での “I will love the police as they kick the shit out of me on the street” 部分がカットされ、(2) “Concentration Moon” 中盤のささやきのフレーズが “Also, at the same time, I get to work with the Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa’s group” となり、(3) “Absolutely Free” 冒頭の “I won’t do publicity balling for you anymore” から “balling” がカットされ、(4) 同じく “Absolutely Free” の途中で “flower power sucks” というフレーズがカットされ、(5) “Hot Poop” では逆回転部分がカットされ、いびきの様な音は別テイク、そして (6) “Let’s Make The Water Turn Black” では “And I still remember Mama with her apron and her pads, feeding all the boys at Ed’s Cafe” がばっさりカットされています。

The difference from so-called “normally cencored version can be summarized in six points: (1) the phrase “I will love the police as they kick the shit out of me on the street” was cut on the track “Who Needs The Peace Corps?” ; (2) on “Concentration Moon”, Gary Kellgren’s whispering was edited as “Also, at the same time, I get to work with the Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa’s group” ; (3) The word “balling” was cut from the first pharase “I won’t do publicity balling for you anymore” on the track “Absolutely Free” ; (4) The phrase “flower power sucks” was cut on the track “Absolutely Free” ; (5) the backwards “Mother People” verse was cut on the track “Hot Poop”, and different version of snork ; (6) and on the track “Let’s Make The Water Turn Black”, the lines “And I still remember Mama with her apron and her pads, feeding all the boys at Ed’s Cafe” were inexplicably cut out.

Especially the edit (6) is definitely bad – while listening to the track, four bars were suddenly cut out and it breaks the completeness of this tune. By the way, it was at the Dutch music award “Edison” when Frank Zappa listened to this heavily censored version for the first time – he was upset and he refused to receive the award (in Europe, especially in West Germany, heavily censored version was pressed and sold at the time).

Later, I acquired the “normally censored version” on vinyl, with dead wax matrix ending with REV F. Like “heavily censored version”, the mix is quite different from the 1984 remix version CD. Anyway this version was what Frank Zappa himself edited in 1967-1968 and what he wished to release. First, this normal censored version was out, and a bit later, someone in the record company did additional censorship and released the second version, “heavily censored version” (German and UK vinyl followed this heavily censored version).

But I have some questions in mind – why heavily censored version has longer edit on (2)? – why heavily censored version has different version of snork on (5)? Normally thinking suggests that Zappa firstly released the normally censored version, and using the same master tape, more censorships were made and it became heavily censored version. So the truth might be like this – Zappa struggled with final mastering of this album, and he created several versions of final tapes. One of them was used directly for normally censored version, and someone in the record company used another tape, cut out a bit, and it became heavily censored version.

Recent CD reissues (1995 and on) consists of “normally censored version”, which was remastered by Zappa when he was alive. I feel I understand why Zappa wished to remix and re-record drums and bass, but after all, he seemed to follow many fans’ requests.

Recently I feel Frank Zappa and his music has been one of the most important thing in my music tastes. I can say Zappa is now my third holy musician who gives me lots of inspirations and fascination, next to Thelonious Monk and James Brown 🙂

Waka/Jawaka、Grand Wazoo、Zappa In New York、Roxy and Elsewhere

    Waka/Jawaka、Grand Wazoo
Zappa In New York、Roxy and Elsewhere

We’re Only In It For The Monry からでFreak Out!、Absolutely Free は後買いです。
