Boogie 4 Stu: A Tribute To Ian Stewart / Ben Waters

In my humble opinion, the most interesting part of this album is NOT the fact that all members of The Rolling Stones plays on this album, but how the leader Ben Waters interprets good old Boogie Woogie / R&B tunes connected to the late Ian Stewart… I bought the limited 2LP edition of the album (with bonus tracks).

My honest impression on these tracks are, the steady drumming by Charlie Watts doesn’t match the moods of good ol’ boogie woogie and blues – maybe the driving and rolling rhythm (that would make most of such boogie tunes) is not in his vocabulary. So the acceptable tracks (that Charlie’s drumming rather matches with the performance by other players) are A-3 “Worried Life Blues” and B-2 “Midnight Blues” IMHO.

However, the total impression on this album is a good one – the members enjoying the session, reminding the moods and atmosphere of that good old days that Ian would love much.

The song I love – D-1 “Kidney Stew Blues” (only on Japanese edition) by the often overlooked genius Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson – is, unfortunately, under the average. Again, Charlie’s drums doesn’t make most of the fascination of the song…

Piano and Hammond Organ by the leader Ben Waters (as well as Jools Holland) are simply attractive – unlike the Ian Stewart’s piano of simple but original stylings, these two players definitely presents gorgeous “modern” way of Boogie Woogie piano. The horn section is also impressive – rock solid, backing the band with steady riffs and sometimes solo improvisations. Another interesting feature is P.J. Harvey on B-3 “Lonely Avenue” – not in the good ol’ mood, but Miss Harvey and Waters successfully created a track full of original mood.

Maybe the most of the people who have bought and enjoyed this album would be the Stones’ fan as well, and would regard this album as “featuring all Stones members on one track” – actually the track B-4 “Watching The River Flow” is the highlight of the album featuring all members of The Rolling Stones (even featuring Bill Wyman on bass!).

But on the other hand, I sincerely hope that some people would get interested in the great wide world of Boogie Woogie and R&B in the Pre/Middle/Post-WWII era as well.
