Maestro Michael Yee’s New DAC Is On Its Way (that finally became MYDAC II later)

Maestro Michael Yee from Mount Shasta, CA, who has been a fabulous designer, developer and engineer of highly-acclaimed audiophile phono preamps (such as Phonomena, Phonomena 2, Nova Phonomena and SuperNova / SuperNova 2) and handful of power amplifiers, has been working very earnestly to develop a new DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) with a very new technique and method. I (living in Tokyo, Japan) have been a huge fan of him and his products since I bought a second-hand unit of Musical Surroundings Phonomena + BPS back in 2004.

This time, very friendly, diligent and honest person Michael-san kindly gave me the privilege to do a listening test of the prototype of his coming product that was intended to prove his new technique, and wow – although I am still new to the digital playback world (my primary music source still is “analog” – vinyl records), the sound nearly knocked me out – it’s very analogue!

Again, please note that I am NOT an avid ‘hardcore’ audiophile, who is still new to recent evolution in the digital audio field such as PC Audio and Hi-Reso playback. I still prefer spinning vinyls on my loving turntable. I haven’t had a chance to audition various DACs for comparison yet (although I sometimes had a chance to listen to the sound of several CD players and DACs at audio shops or at my acquaintances’ house) – so please keep in mind the review below is just my impression who often listens to music with the turntable.

Here is the prototype – circuit board only – no chassis yet.

From left to right: 12VDC power, USB input, S/PDIF Optical (aka TOS-link) input, S/PDIF Coax input, and two channel RCA output. S/PDIF inputs can handle digital input up to 24bit / 192kHz, while the USB input only accepts 16bit / 44.1kHz and below (he says the future versions will handle up to 192 USB input). No direct DSD support.

As this is a pre-production unit prior to the final product, I don’t mention here which DAI/DAC chips, op-amps and FPGA are used on the board. He describes the construction like this in his own words (quoted from the e-mail I got):

…I use very ordinary opamps, and DA chips, the only difference with this unit is my noise shaping technique. I have a DAC here that sounds much better than the one you have, it uses discrete opamps that I’ve designed, an interpolation filter that I like much better as well as multi-bit 24 bit DA chips. It is very special, but not good at showing what the noise shaping technique does…

This noise shaping technique is later named as MODR (or Musically Optimized Digital Reconstruction).

このノイズシェーピング技術はのちに、MODR(Musically Optimized Digital Reconstruction)と呼ばれることになります。

Initially I tested with a very casual configuration: MacBook Air (Mid 2011), OS X Lion 10.7.4, USB connection (up to 16/44), making sure the output is 44.1kHz & 16bit on Audio MIDI Setup application, iTunes 10.6.3 (no BitPerfect or Audirvana installed), library shared from my another Mac in my room via WiFi. Very casual and easy setup without no specific tuning, no?

The DAC output is connected to my tube amplifier (Triode VB-300BD) which drives a set of JBL 4312B MkII loudspeakers – as you may notice these components are not for avid hardcore audiophiles at all. The only exception is analog environment – my loving GyroDec and SuperNova II, which of course have nothing to do with digital playback this time. I had a TEAC VRDS-25X for CD playback but recently I sold off this CD player because I was not enthusiastic about CD playback (this was why I didn’t even replace the CD player for long years).

The first track I played was “Aloha Oe” from the album “American VI: Ain’t No Grave” (2010), the very last track on the late great Johnny Cash’s posthumous album. I have both CD edition and vinyl LP edition, and I love the sound of the LP edition (with GyroDec and SuperNova II) far better. A beautiful and moving album indeed. CD tracks were imported using Exact Audio Copy for perfect ripping, then converted into Apple Lossless (reversible compressed) format, imported to iTunes.

After a few minutes of audition, my conclusion instantly settled down – this is very analogue – sounding very smooth, sharp, rich and warm as if I was playing the vinyl edition. This ironically proves that I only had very poor CD playback, but at the same time for sure, I haven’t listened to the digital playback with such analogue feel like this anywhere in the past.

Interestingly enough, my four-years-old daughter asked me: “Papa, why this sound without spinning turntable?” – she gets used to the analogue sound from GyroDec for many years and she really knows how the analogue records sound like. My wife nearly scolded her when my daughter was dancing and jumping along with the music, because my wife thought I was playing vinyl records (and nearly asked her to stop jumping, not to occur needle skips!) – she also felt it sounded like analogue.

Subsequently I listened to various tracks under the same casual configuration – old recordings to recent recordings, AAD recording to DDD recording, remastered or not, Jazz, Pops, Rock, Classical, Brazilian or whatever – but the impression was the same. Very analogue, period.

The developer of this DAC Michael Yee-san describes the magic like this:

…What I found regarding digital: the distortion characteristics of digital: The largest signals have the lowest distortion, the smallest signals have the most distortion. The distortion characteristics of analog: Completely the opposite (noise excluded)…
…For signals with significant decay, almost all signals, they will start with very low distortion then get very distorted. A perfect example is a cymbal hit. In digital, this sounds like just a splash. With my new D/A, you can hear the wavefront start in the center and travel to the outsides, then back and forth. It’s almost more analog than analog! The basic sound of the D/A is REALLY analog, smooth, no seams, really detailed…
…I developed a technique, similar to “noise shaping”, but it is “distortion shaping” where I take some of the resolution away from one frequency zone and give it to another…
…One of the things the “noise shaping” does is, it “reconstructs” the waveform. One of the things that I did was to make a bias toward reconstructing “music” and “natural sounds”, not reconstructing for mathematical perfection. Perhaps it’s better to say that I’ve developed mathematics that describes music and natural sound, it comes from the work that I do with my amplifiers…

His basic description as shown above shows the basic of his technique, altering digital input, then processing D/A, and equalizing in the analogue stage (like phono preamps).

Very interestingly enough, very analogue engineer who had developed very analogue phono preamps and power amplifiers, developed this time very digital equipment that sounds very analogue in very mathematical way. Another interesting thing is that he, who developed phono preamps that sounds very natural and raw without adding any colouration, is now developing a DAC that alters the digital stream of sound positively and willingly to sound like analogue.

His direction may not be popular trends in the recent PC Audio / Hi-Reso Digital Audio scene, but after I listened to this sound, I believe he is going the right way (with another perspective) with his unique technique and the deep understandings on the beauty of the music. He’s a man of passion for music and sound.

By the way, the technique that reconstructs the waveform based on a certain mathematical theory simply reminds me of “Legato Link” Conversion that was equipped with past PIONEER CD players. But as far as I remember, the sound from the PIONEER players with Legato Link on was completely different from that of Michael Yee’s DAC in development. The former sounded smooth but a bit “artificial”, while the latter sounds very analogue and natural in every way – even with the playback of compressed music (128 or 192kbps MP3/M4A) like a magic.

I don’t know when his devoted work finally evolves into final products, but let’s be patient – I believe it’s completely worth waiting for! For the time being, I think I will play this marvellous DAC board with various music in various format, including hi-reso playback via S/PDIF – and I hope I will compare the sound with those of other recent DACs if possible.

Addendum (Feb. 15, 2013): The prototype I briefly reviewed here (not here now anymore though) turned out to be Musical Surroundings MYDAC II – I see many positive (and some enthusiastic) reviews here and there on the web – take a look at one example. He’s been developing very earnestly for his next products that will be based on a different chipset (and that will have some better features).

Addendum (Apr. 25, 2014): TAS (The Absolute Sound) now has very detailed review on MYDAC II – including very detailed description of the MODR technique, in Michael-san’s own words – must read.
