Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put 'em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach's other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

先日、mhatta さんに 教えてもらって 速攻で購入した CD。 なんといっても Monk と Steve Lacy の共演が聴ける (!!) というだけでそそられます。

The other day mhatta-san let me know the release of the CD - we can finally listen to the Monk quartet with Steve Lacy on soprano sax!

さて 前回 載せた 6枚の中に チャールズ・ミンガス (Charles Mingus) の「ティファナ・ムーズ」(“Tijuana Moods”) も入っていました。ベーシストとして、作曲家として、アレンジャーとして、つまり Mingus の多岐に渡る要素がバランス良くフィーチャーされた、初期の名作といえます。

On my previous post, there are six labels (78rpms, 45rpms and LPs) being featured. They include the LP “Tijuana Moods” by Charles Mingus, one of his masterpiece albums in his early period, featuring his every versatile artistry such as a great bass player, a talented composer, and a superb arranger.

アンプが返ってくるまでは、2001年に BMG からリリースされた 2枚組 CD を聴いています。この CD は未発表のフラグメントもテンコ盛りで、文字通り本アルバムの決定版となっています。しかし、この CD を隅々まで聴けば聴く程、“Tijuana Moods” というアルバムに対するいくつかの謎が解明されると同時に、更なる謎は深まるばかり。

Since my tube amplifier is in trouble and is under repair, the only equipment for me at the moment is a PC speaker, and I enjoy listening (although the sound quality is way poor) to the 2CD edition of “Tijuana Moods”, which was released in 2001 by BMG. This definitive 2CD version contains many bonus tracks, most of which are previously-unreleased fragments of the recording. And more devotedly I listen to the CD, the more questions arise in my head, while on the other hand this CD edition also reveals the answers to the mysteries of the album.

アンプを修理に出して はや 6日。かなり辛くなってきました。

PC 上で CD を再生し、そこから流れてくる貧弱な音を聴きつつ、脳内補間修正して楽しむというのはかなり大変な労力を要します。とはいえ、イマジネーションや記憶力を駆使しないといけないので、これはこれで楽しいような気も。いや、楽しい様な気がするなんて思ってきてるのは末期症状なのかも。ヤヴァイ。

SP や LP のレーベルを眺めながら、PC に向かって貧弱な音を聴く。

早くこの悲惨な状況を脱したいものです。

以下、ここ数日に PC の前で眺めていたレーベル達。 正確には、1枚だけ CD で持ってないものが混ざってますが . . .

    

    

    

時代錯誤と揶揄されようとも信念を貫き通した、レトロマニアの愛すべき頑固親父。The La's の Lee Mavers と並び、1990年代初頭の UK インディーロックシーンで強烈な個性を発揮した The Stairs の Edgar Summertime。その彼が昨年 (本名の Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones 名義で) ソロアルバムを出していたことを最近になって知り、大急ぎで CD を購入しました。本当に最近の情報に疎くなってしまい、悲しいやら情けないやら . . .

Two lovable guys, hopelessly stubborn kinda individuals, perfection of anachronism - they are Lee Mavers (of The La's) and Edgar Summertime (of The Stairs), both of who left remarkable individualities in the UK Indie Rock scene in the early 1990s. Recently I happened to know Edgar Summertime released his first solo album (under his real name, Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones) in 2005, which is so astonishing and astounding. It's really awful and shameful to me that I know few things about recent music scene nowadays...
