今は昔、ラジオやテレビと共に、リスナーに音楽を届ける重要なメディアとして塩化ヴィニール製のレコード (33 1/3回転の LP レコードと 45回転のシングルレコード) が活躍していた時代。その頃、レコードの製作・製造いうのは、非常にデリケートで細密な技術を要する 高度な職人技 に支えられていました。

Back in the old days when vinyl records (33 1/3rpm LP records and 45rpm single records) played one of the most popular media to deliver various kinds of music to audience (radio and television broadcasts would be vinyl's counterparts), making vinyl records was like a result of delicate and detailed craftmanship which needed high degree of difficulties.

This afternoon mother-in-law went long way back to Kobe. She stayed with us for about a month to help us with the baby. Thank you so much anyway.

The only regret with her was, for me, that she didn't like listening to music much, and that she didn't understand how much (and how often) I love listening to music as a daily basis. So while she was staying with us at home, the loud speaker on the right side had to stay away from the speaker-stand, because the speaker is always located in front of the window to the veranda, and she always complained that the speaker stood in her way out to the veranda with laundry . . . yes she's right.

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put 'em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach's other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice -
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

V.A. 特集 第3回 から随分間があいてしまいました。今回は、レーベルの枠も越えて出された Various ものの中で特に興味深いリリースを紹介します。 あの Playboy 誌の企画から生まれた 2枚組です。

It's been a while since I posted V.A. Pt. 3 article. Here is the fourth article being focused on Sampler LPs and Various Artists album, but it's a bit different - an interesting double LP album which was derived from Playboy magazine.

V.A. 特集 第2回 に続き今回紹介する 3枚目は、Verve レーベルの Various ものです。 Clef、Norgran、そしてこの Verve と通じて、 Norman Granz が立ち上げたレーベルにおいて いわゆるサンプラー的なアルバムというのはどうもなさそうなのですが (実際にはあるかも知れません。 もしご存じでしたらご教授下さい)、 コンピレーション盤、いわゆる Various ものはカタログ内に大量に存在しています。 これもそんな 1枚なのですが...

Here is the third V.A. LP, from the Verve label (previous entries can be reached from here: Pt. 1 and Pt. 2). As far as I know, there is no “Sampler LPs” of Clef / Norgran / Verve labels (all supervised by Norman Granz) - but if you happen to know the existence of Clef / Norgran / Verve sampler LPs, please let me know. On the other hand, these labels had so many Various Artists LPs (or what is called “compilations”) in the catalogue. This LP is one of them, but there is an interesting fact...

あっという間に2005年は過ぎ、2006年を迎えました。今年も宜しくお願いします。

The year 2005 passed so fast, and here comes the next year 2006 already. I sincerely hope you'll have another nice year as vinyl/music collectors.

昨年1年間は、コレクターとしてはあまり成果があった年とはいえませんでしたが、またまたいろんな音楽に出会うことができました。振り返って個人的ベスト 5 (プラス、番外編) を列挙してみましょう。

Speaking of myself, the year 2005 was not the best one as a collector, but there are several “great” acquisitions as well as finding a great music. Here is my own “best five” (plus an extra title) ...

Bossa Nova 誕生を鮮やかに告げたとされる Joao Gilbelto (ジョアン・ジルベルト) の 1959年リリース LP “Chega De Saudade” でプロデューサを務めた Aloysio De Oliveira (アロイージオ・ヂ・オリヴェイラ) がオデオンやフィリップスを離れて作ったレーベル、 そして全身全霊を傾けてプロデュースした珠玉の作品群が未だに高い評価を受けているレーベル、 ELENCO。

The famous and highly-acclaimed ELENCO label - produced by the legendary Aloysio De Oliveira. He devotedly produced a number of fine Bossa Nova albums after he left Odeon and Philips. He was also known as a producer of legendary 1959 album “Chega De Saudade” (performed by Joao Gilbelto), which was a very start of Bossa Nova's public release.

私がここ暫くこのレーベル蒐集にハマっていまして、整理の意味も兼ねて、アルバムリストを掲載します。また、各 LP のページ (より詳しいデータやジャケット写真など) のページも順次作成していく予定です。

Recently I've been into collecting Elenco LPs, and that's why I started to put here a list of all Elenco LPs. Also, I think I will put pages dedicated to each Elenco LPs (including detailed information and scanned images) in the near future.
