Recently in Django Reinhardt Category

On August 18, I drove east to Tsukuba City in Ibaraki, to visit my mentor/guru/master of Jazz 78rpm records, Tohru Seya-san - he's been probably one of the greatest, generous and openhearted collector - also he's been one of the most dilligent researcher of pre-bop Jazz.

もうひと月以上前になりますが、ジャズSPレコードの大先輩というか師匠というか尊師というか、つくばにあるその方のお宅に伺いました。数千枚以上もある膨大なSPコレクターにして戦前ジャズの熱心な研究で知られる 瀬谷徹 さんです。

We had a great time, discussing about old Jazz, listening to great Jazz sounds with his amazing audio equipment - an old tube amp, RCA professional 16-inch turntable, Jensen field speaker from 1930s and more - (believe me he's not that snobbish, but he's just a dilligent music enthusiast) - the first one we enjoyed was this record - 16-inch US Navy Transcription 33rpm record, featuring June Christy, Shelly Manne etc. Other 78rpms we enjoyed so much today includes Django Reinhardt, The Spirits Of Rhythm, Chick Webb, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday, Meade Lux Lewis and many more that I was like in heaven...

その先輩のお宅でふたり、時を忘れて音楽の話題で盛り上がりつつ極上の音楽を楽しみました。この、16インチ放送局用レコードもかけられる業務用プレーヤーでまず聞かせてもらったのはジューン・クリスティとシェリー・マンを含む米海軍向け16インチトランスクリプション。その後もジャンゴ・ラインハルト、チック・ウェブ、コールマン・ホーキンス、ビリー・ホリディ、ミード・ルクス・ルイス、その他数え切れない程の戦前ジャズを、オリジナルのSP盤で、真空管アンプと戦前に作られたモノラルスピーカーで堪能させて頂きました。帰宅したあともしばらく余韻がさめやらないほど夢見心地の一日となりました。

音楽のダウンロード販売も非常にポピュラーになってきたこのご時世、国内の音楽となると、さすがに LP での新譜リリースというのはほとんどみかけなくなりましたが、海外では音楽ジャンルによっては LP での同時リリースも (限定販売的であることが多いものの) 根強く残っているようです。

私の場合、LP でリリースされない音源を買わない、なんてことはさすがにありませんが、CD と LP の両方のフォーマットでリリースされると分かった盤については、躊躇なく LP で買ってしまいます。

それにしても、CD でも出ているのに、どうしていまさら LP の方で買ってしまいたくなるのか。

時は1960年7月4日、場所はロードアイランド州ニューポートのとある邸宅。ここで興味深いレコーディングが行われ、レコード化されたのでした。

It was on July 4, 1960 at a certain beautiful mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, where and when an interesting recording session was made for vinyl release.

It was just a few years ago when I decided to listen to Django Reinhardt very seriously - of course I have heard of his music here and there since over a decade ago, but when I happened to obtain the below 3CD box, I was completely shocked by his complete artistry - since then, I have devotedly listened to ths box set dozen of times. And recently, a new desire come on my mind - I would like to listen to his music on 78rpms!

私が Django Reinhardt (ジャンゴ・ラインハルト) を真剣に聴くようになったのは実はここ数年のことです。もちろん、Django の音楽自体は、ずっと前からあちこちで耳にしていましたが、3年ほど前に、以下の 3枚組 CD ボックスを入手して、彼の完璧な音楽性に完全にヤラれてしまいました。それからというもの、この CD を何十回となく聴きまくる日々が続きました。そして最近、新たな欲求がわきあがってきました - SP 盤で聴いてみたい。

Rock 系のコレクターにはお馴染み、 buzzy-bee さんによる秀逸なサイト Record Collect Errors? は、各レーベルのデザイン変遷を丹念に調べていくという everlasting project ですが、 2006年 2月25日時点で buzzy-bee さんのところで抜けている情報を中心に、 レーベルデザインの変遷を本稿にまとめてみました。 buzzy-bee さんのサイトに merge して頂ければ幸いです。

まずは 初期 Reprise レーベル (1968年まで) から。 現在もう1つ、某レーベルの分も準備中です。 続編 (?) の初期 Capitol レーベル編は こちら からどうぞ。

The fantastic web site Record Collect Errors? is an impressive and everlasting project which tries to keep track of many labels' design variations headed by buzzy-bee-san. And here is a first step of my contribution to the project (hope this information will be merged into the buzzy-bee-san's web site). The first information here is on Reprise label's design variations in its early era (up to 1968).
