今は昔、ラジオやテレビと共に、リスナーに音楽を届ける重要なメディアとして塩化ヴィニール製のレコード (33 1/3回転の LP レコードと 45回転のシングルレコード) が活躍していた時代。その頃、レコードの製作・製造いうのは、非常にデリケートで細密な技術を要する 高度な職人技 に支えられていました。

Back in the old days when vinyl records (33 1/3rpm LP records and 45rpm single records) played one of the most popular media to deliver various kinds of music to audience (radio and television broadcasts would be vinyl's counterparts), making vinyl records was like a result of delicate and detailed craftmanship which needed high degree of difficulties.

ここ最近、いろんな デュオ演奏 のアルバムを好んで聴いています。デュオというフォーマットは、ソロ、トリオ (あるいはそれ以上) とはなにか異なる、なにか特別な形態なのかもしれません。二人という形式でしかなし得ない、両者の流れる様な対話が、時に二人だけではなし得ないかの様な音楽的な多様性を生み出すこともあったり。Sir Roland Hanna と George Mraz というスーパーデュオによるこのアルバムも、私にとってはそんな一枚です。

I've been picking up and enjoying various duo albums for a while. Sometimes duo performances create something special other than unaccompanied solo, trio or whatsover - they have fluent dialogue and chemistry between two players (which only two persons can achieve), which sometimes results in musical diversity as if more than two persons can achieve. This album by Super Duo - Sir Roland Hanna and George Mraz - is one of such things for me.

Helen Merrill's popularity has been incredibly huge here in Japan - even most of ordinary people have ever listened to her voice so many times (via TV commercials or BGM), and her first album (on EmArcy) has been regarded as one of the best masterpiece female Jazz vocal albums ever - first pressing copy of MG-36006 sometimes goes to incredible final bid over 1000 USD at auctions (if it's in mintish condition), since so many Jazz LP collectors in Japan wish to own the LP - Gosh!

ここ日本での ヘレン・メリル (Helen Merrill) の人気は (欧米からみると) 想像を絶する程なのでしょう。特にジャズに興味がない人ですら、テレビのコマーシャルや番組の BGM として彼女の声に親しんでいますし、EmArcy のファーストアルバムは、女性ジャズヴォーカルの傑作の1枚として大変な人気です。オークションなどでは、その MG-36006 のファーストプレスが、(状態が完璧な盤であれば) 1000ドルオーバー (ひえぇぇぇ) で落札されたりします。常軌を逸したその最終価格はまちがいなく、物凄い数の日本人ジャズコレクターが、あのアルバムを所有したいと思っているからに他なりません。

The album is actually the masterpiece. Her fascinating voice sets the entire mood - tense, beautiful, monochrome and at the same time very warm. Quincy Jones' appropriate arrangements enhance her artistry, and Clifford Brown's perfect performance doubles the total quality. But I don't want to listen to this album hunderds of times, just because I don't want to feel enough - I do want to make much of tremendous “shock” I had when I listened to this album for the first time.

もちろん、このアルバムは文句なしに大名盤です。彼女の素晴らしい (緊張感に溢れ、美しく、モノクロームの如き魅力があり、同時に暖かみすら感じさせる) 声が全体のムードを支配し、クインシー・ジョーンズ (Quincy Jones) の的確なアレンジメントが彼女の魅力を一層引き立て、クリフォード・ブラウン (Clifford Brown) の完璧な演奏によりその魅力が更に倍増しているのですから。ですが、私はこのアルバムを何百回も聴きたくはありません。それは、このアルバムに飽きてしまいたくないからです。そう、このアルバムを初めて聴いた時のあの「衝撃」を出来るだけ長くとどめておきたいからです。

As for me, the most frequently played album by Helen Merrill is the following one. Interestingly, I feel this album has another kind of fascination, which EmArcy's first album doesn't have.

そんな私が、最も頻繁にターンテーブルに載せる Helen Merrill のアルバムは以下の盤です。興味深いことに、このアルバムには EmArcy のファーストアルバムにはない、また別の魅力がある様に感じます。

いやはや、あまりのアホらしさにむかついてきましたよ。

Universal Music Japan が，(旧日本ポリドール，旧日本フォノグラムの頃から) 久しぶりに LP 再発 を行います．2004年12月22日リリース，全20タイトルです．

Universal Music Japan will release 20 famous Jazz titles in LP format on December 22, 2004. It will be a long time since Nippon Polydor and Nippon Phonogram (both labels were the predecessors of Universal Music Japan) released LPs last.

今回の再発の目玉は，そのタイトル群ではなく (もちろん，どれも Impulse, Verve, EmArcy, Philips レーベルなどの著名な人気盤であることは間違いないです)，オリジナル・アナログ・カッティング・マスターを使用してニューヨークにて現地カッティング という点でしょう．カッティングエンジニアは Joseph M. Palamaccio さんだそうです．さる有力筋からの情報によると，音質的にもかなり期待できるとのこと．

The most remarkable point is not each title itself (of course all titles in the series include very famous masterpieces from Impulse, Verve, EmArcy, Philips labels), but that all titles were cut in the US using original analogue master tapes. The cutting engineer for this reissue series is Joseph M. Palamaccio. According to a certain influential person's note, this series will provide very nice sounds which will surely convince audiophiles.
