今は昔、ラジオやテレビと共に、リスナーに音楽を届ける重要なメディアとして塩化ヴィニール製のレコード (33 1/3回転の LP レコードと 45回転のシングルレコード) が活躍していた時代。その頃、レコードの製作・製造いうのは、非常にデリケートで細密な技術を要する 高度な職人技 に支えられていました。

Back in the old days when vinyl records (33 1/3rpm LP records and 45rpm single records) played one of the most popular media to deliver various kinds of music to audience (radio and television broadcasts would be vinyl's counterparts), making vinyl records was like a result of delicate and detailed craftmanship which needed high degree of difficulties.

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put 'em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach's other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice -
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

相変わらず 忙しい ため、 書きためたドラフト記事の公開もままなりませんが、少し息抜きに . . .

先月、都内の某中古レコード店の壁に “Sonny Clark Trio” (Time T-70010) のオリジナル LP が飾ってあるのを見ましたが、そのプライスタグを見てびっくり。なんと 30万円。ひぇぇぇ。

Last month I visited a certain vinyl shop in Tokyo and found the original mono LP of “Sonny Clark Trio” (Time T-70010). The most surprising thing was its price - 300 thousand yen (approximately 2,600 USD) - oh my!

ヴィンテージ盤の売価なんて、需要と供給で決まる側面が基本ではあるものの、大抵は お店の言い値 であることがほとんどで、こんな凄い値段がついていても、買う人は買ってしまうところが凄いというか。とにかく、私の様な「コストパフォーマンス重視」の一般ピープル (笑) には全く縁のない世界ではあります。

Usually, a price of a hard-to-find vintage LP is roughly set by the “supply and demand” balance. Also, the price is also usually set by a shop's own decision. And it's also surprising that there are some people surely to exist who buy such LPs even though it's too expensive against “reasonable price”. Anyway I (as one of “ordinary people” who makes much of “cost-performance”) must be a perfect stranger to such an expensive vintage LP.

やっとこさアンプが帰ってきました。結局直流点火回路のダイオードの不良ということだった様です。ダイオードとコンデンサを少しキャパの大きいものに交換して下さいました。また、300B のバイアス調整もし直してくれていました (つかせめてこれくらい自分でやれよ > 俺)。部品代はサービスして下さったので (感謝感謝) 工賃のみ支払い、車に積んで越谷からひとっ走り、えっちらおっちらと部屋に運び込み、早速接続を終えたところで、アンプ復帰後最初の一枚。 やはり この前 レーベルを載せた、あの盤です。

    

Un Poco Loco c/w It Could Hapen To You / Bud Powell
(Blue Note [US] 1577)

12インチ LP では 3テイクが冒頭に収録されているせいもあってか、リスナーとして征服すべき、こ難しい曲と思われることもあるようですが、このテーマ部のラテン風味なアレンジは理屈抜きでカッチョエーとしかいいようがないと思うねんけどなぁ。

盤質は最高とはいかないけど、SP 独特のサーフェスノイズと分離して、えげつない程圧倒的な 3人の演奏が襲いかかってきます。特に Roach のドラムスとカウベルの響きの鋭さといったら。サーフェスノイズに負けずに大音量で聴くのが正解。B面のソロは、全体の構成やタッチもさることながら、ペダルの妙技をじっくり味わうべきでしょう。

はぁ、ともあれ辛かった修行僧生活は終わり。えがったえがった。

アンプを修理に出して はや 6日。かなり辛くなってきました。

PC 上で CD を再生し、そこから流れてくる貧弱な音を聴きつつ、脳内補間修正して楽しむというのはかなり大変な労力を要します。とはいえ、イマジネーションや記憶力を駆使しないといけないので、これはこれで楽しいような気も。いや、楽しい様な気がするなんて思ってきてるのは末期症状なのかも。ヤヴァイ。

SP や LP のレーベルを眺めながら、PC に向かって貧弱な音を聴く。

早くこの悲惨な状況を脱したいものです。

えー、2004年11月に公開した 「Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”」 以来、Mercury Records Collection に載せた、大変久し振りとなるコラムです。 第2回となる今回は、何人かからのリクエストにお応えして、 EmArcy レーベルに関する四方山話としました。 かなり長くなりそうなので、2〜3回に分けて掲載する予定です。今回はその前編。 とりあえず日本語版だけの公開です。 こちら からどうぞ。

Well, it's been a very long time since I published the very first article back in Nov. 2004 (entitled Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”). Here is the second article (by several friends' requests), talking all sorts of things about EmArcy label. The entire article will be getting very long, and here is the “Part 1” of the EmArcy article. Sorry, the English edition of the article is not ready yet (only Japanese edition is currently available) - stay tuned.

え〜，buzzy-bee さんの Record Collect Errors? を補追するこの企画 (?)、 前回の 初期 Reprise レーベル (1968年頃まで) に続き、 第2回は 初期 Capitol レーベル 編 (1962年頃まで) をお届けいたします。

Well, this is a second attempt to contribute some information to the fantastic web site Record Collect Errors? by buzzy-bee san. Preceded by the early Reprise label, this second information here deals with Capitol label's design variations in its early era (up to early 1960s).

私が Jazz を本格的に聴き出した 1989年からお世話になった OJC (Original Jazz Classics) の再発 LP 達。当時大学1回生だった私は、大阪梅田のレコード屋さんで、1枚1,200円から1,400円という非常にお買い得な値段に惹かれて、多数の OJC 盤を買い求め、Riverside、Prestige、Contemporary、Fantasy といったレーベルの再発盤を楽しんでいました。

その後、大学院生の頃にアルバイトをしていた某レコード輸出入卸会社で、社員価格 700円 (要するに卸値ってことでしょうかね) で買える事を知るや、OJC の購入は更に加速していきました。

1万円のオリジナル盤を 7枚買うより、700円の OJC を100枚買う方が、自分の音楽的嗜好を広げ、知識を蓄積する上でどれだけ役にたったことか。

当時既に OJC の CD リリースも本格的に始まっていましたが、下宿先にはアナログプレーヤーしかなかった (笑) こともあり、ひたすら LP イシューでのみ買い続け、いろんなミュージシャンの演奏を日々楽しみ覚えていきました。何度も聴きまくってノイズが増えてしまい、買い直した盤も何枚かあったっけ。 OJC-655 (Portrait of Sonny Criss) を最後に LP リリースが終わってしまった時は残念だったなぁ。

僕にとって Jazz 入門時にとてもお世話になった OJC の LP 達。去る 1月末に、他のダブり盤と一緒に、とうとう某中古レコード屋さんに売りに出してしまいました。買い取り価格は当然安かった (どの盤も200円から350円の間でした) のですが、収納スペースに乏しい現在の住居では致し方ありません。それに、ほとんどの盤は飽きる程聴き込みましたし、どうしてももう一度聴きたい盤があったとしても、その都度中古で買えばいいだけですし。 お勉強代としては安かった というものです、はい。

今まで本当にありがとう、OJC の LP 達。新しいオーナー達のところで、また活躍してあげて下さいな。

あっという間に2005年は過ぎ、2006年を迎えました。今年も宜しくお願いします。

The year 2005 passed so fast, and here comes the next year 2006 already. I sincerely hope you'll have another nice year as vinyl/music collectors.

昨年1年間は、コレクターとしてはあまり成果があった年とはいえませんでしたが、またまたいろんな音楽に出会うことができました。振り返って個人的ベスト 5 (プラス、番外編) を列挙してみましょう。

Speaking of myself, the year 2005 was not the best one as a collector, but there are several “great” acquisitions as well as finding a great music. Here is my own “best five” (plus an extra title) ...

さて、 V.A. 特集 第1回 に続き紹介する 2枚目は、あの Time レーベルのサンプラーです。 EmArcy レーベルをたちあげたあの Bob Shad が Mercury を離れて自ら立ち上げたレーベルとして知られており、Booker Little、Sonny Clark、Kenny Dorham などの作品が有名です。このサンプラー LP は、そのうちトランペッターに焦点を絞って編集されたもののようです。

Second sampler LP I'd like to introduce here is the one by Time label. Time was a label of that Bob Shad, who was famous as a producer of EmArcy label. Bob Shad left Mercury in 1958, and started his own label, Time.

Finally, I have acquired the famous 78rpm album which I'd been dreaming of for several years.

実際のリリースから随分と間があいてしまいましたが、 昨年リリースされて そこそこ好評だった ユニバーサル　”JAZZ THE BEST ”LPコレクション の第2弾がこの夏リリースされました。

In last year, Universal Music Japan released a bunch of fine Jazz LP reissues entitled Universal “JAZZ THE BEST” LP Collection, most of which were highly acclaimed by vinyl enthusiasts. To follow the success, Universal Japan released another bunch of LP reissues this summer.

• ユニバーサル　”JAZZ THE BEST ”LPコレクション　第２弾

今回の復刻にあたり、岡村融さんを通じて UCJU-9031 / UCJU-9034 / UCJU-9043 と 3枚に関して、光栄にも貢献することができました (復刻の元となるオリジナルジャケットとレーベルの貸出)。 また、UCJU-9025 や UCJU-9039 といった EmArcy 原盤については、ファーストプレスのチェックポイントを指摘しました (ジャケット裏の印刷色やレーベルの微妙な特徴など)。

It was my great pleasure that, thru the famous Tohru Okamura-san, I could do a bit of contribution upon some of these LP reissues - lent the 1st pressing copies of UCJU-9031, UCJU-9034 and UCJU-9043 to the Universal Music Japan for reproduction purpose; also pointed out the detailed checkpoints of reproducing EmArcy LPs such as UCJU-9025 and UCJU-9039 (colour of the ink on the back cover, detailed design of the centre label, for example).

出来上がった製品の見本盤を 9月下旬に頂きましたが、相変わらず細やかな配慮が感じられる良質のリイシューで、特に UCJU-9031 や UCJU-9034 では、当時リリースされたオリジナル盤ではなし得なかった音質を獲得するに至っていると感じました。

In last September, I received the sample copies of the products. And I found that this 2nd series of the LP reissue project was also fascinating kind as well as 1st series. Especially, on such titles as UCJU-9031 and UCJU-9034, I feel that the brand-new-cut discs can deliver very detailed and beautiful sounds which even the original 1st pressing copies did not have.

言うまでもなく、ジャズドラムの可能性を極限まで引き出し、新たな世界を確立することに成功した巨人 Max Roach。戦後ジャズ史に燦然と輝く多数の名演奏を残した Brown=Roach Quintet 時代や、1960年代のアメリカという時代を反映した諸作に勢い評価が傾きがちですが、1970年代以降の作品にも注目すべき作品は少なくありません。

The Jazz Giant Max Roach was, of course, one of the most important Jazz drummers who explored the possibilities of drumming. His greatest works include legendary Brown=Roach Quintet, and his numerous works in the 1960s which reflects the atmosphere of the 1960's USA. However in the 1970s, he recorded several albums which were also far above his average.

のちに Birth of the Cool というタイトルで 10インチ/12インチ LP 化された、問答無用で歴史的名盤とされている Miles Davis Nonet の 1949-1950年録音。その録音時期からして、オリジナルイシューは 78回転 SP であろうことは想像に難くありません。

Miles Davis Nonet's 1949-1950 recordings (which later included on 10-inch/12-inch LP album entitled Birth of the Cool) have been sought as one of the historically important masterpices. By the way, as the recorded date may suggest, these materials were firstly made public on 78rpm issues.

いやはや、あまりのアホらしさにむかついてきましたよ。

久々に期待していた 今回の日本盤 LP リイシュー。全20タイトル中本日10タイトルが発売されました。さてさて、肝心の「おと」の方はどうでしょう? さすがに全タイトルは買えないので、とりあえず EmArcy の 2タイトルだけ買ってみました。

The long-awaited LP reissue series by Universal Music Japan is out. Among 20 titles in all, 10 titles have been released today. Well, how does they “sound” anyway? I can't afford to buy all titles, so this time I bought two EmArcy titles.

Universal Music Japan が，(旧日本ポリドール，旧日本フォノグラムの頃から) 久しぶりに LP 再発 を行います．2004年12月22日リリース，全20タイトルです．

Universal Music Japan will release 20 famous Jazz titles in LP format on December 22, 2004. It will be a long time since Nippon Polydor and Nippon Phonogram (both labels were the predecessors of Universal Music Japan) released LPs last.

今回の再発の目玉は，そのタイトル群ではなく (もちろん，どれも Impulse, Verve, EmArcy, Philips レーベルなどの著名な人気盤であることは間違いないです)，オリジナル・アナログ・カッティング・マスターを使用してニューヨークにて現地カッティング という点でしょう．カッティングエンジニアは Joseph M. Palamaccio さんだそうです．さる有力筋からの情報によると，音質的にもかなり期待できるとのこと．

The most remarkable point is not each title itself (of course all titles in the series include very famous masterpieces from Impulse, Verve, EmArcy, Philips labels), but that all titles were cut in the US using original analogue master tapes. The cutting engineer for this reissue series is Joseph M. Palamaccio. According to a certain influential person's note, this series will provide very nice sounds which will surely convince audiophiles.
