前回の “Night Life” (Ray Price) に続き、今度はアルバムの 1曲目、ゴキゲンなウェスタンスウィングナンバー、“Roly-Poly” をとりあげましょう。 オリジナルは 1945年リリースの Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys。 さきほど小包で届いたばかりの、(私にとっては) ホヤホヤの盤です (笑)

Norah Jones を含む5人のメンバーが、カントリーの渋い名曲 (と数曲のオリジナル曲) を今風にアレンジして好評の Little Willies。ちょうど、Norah のセカンドアルバム “Feels Like Home” のテイストをベースに更にカントリー寄りにアプローチしてみせたサウンド (Norah の片腕 Lee Alexander のお蔭でしょうか) は、改めて好感が持てるものと言えます。Norah が2曲でゲスト参加している、 Joel Harrison の 2003年リリースのアルバム “Free Country” (ACT [Germany] 9319-2) での、ジャンルを越えた自由闊達な再構築 (*1) (それがあのアルバムの良さなんですけどね) とは異なり、本アルバムのカヴァー曲は基本的に原曲のムードとテンポを遵守しており (とはいえ完全コピーではありません)、そこに「あの」現代的な響き〜透明感のあるアコースティックなサウンド〜を付加する、という方向性がみてとれます。

(*1)： とはいっても、Norah Jones 参加の2曲 “I Walk The Line” と “Tennessee Waltz” では、やはりあのスローテンポでムーディなアレンジメントが施されており、この 2曲については Norah のソロアルバムと同じテイストで楽しむことが出来ます。残りの楽曲は本当に面白い。ジャズっぽく、ロックっぽく、ときにはニューウェーブ的なニュアンスも交えながら、あらゆる曲がバラエティ豊かに再構築されていく様はスリリングでさえあります。

ここでは、このアルバムでカヴァーされた数々の曲の、オリジナルバージョンを探訪してみましょう。 といいますか、私がよくこうやって、あるアルバムをきっかけに、いろんな音楽に触れ、嗜好を広げようとするのですが、今回はそれをリアルタイムで本 web に書き記しておこうと思ったのです。

まずは12曲目、誰もが一度は耳にしたことがあるであろう名曲 “Night Life” から。

Ellington のピアノを猛烈に堪能したくなった時にかけるアルバムは? 人それぞれ、“Money Jungle” (United Artists) だったり、 “Duke Ellington & John Coltrane” (Impulse!) だったり、 “Piano In The Foreground” (Columbia) だったり、 あるいは渋〜く “The Pianist” (Fantasy) という人もいたり。

Which is your favourite album, when you want to fully appreciate the piano artistry of the great Duke Ellington? Some may say “Money Jungle” (United Artists) - others may include “Duke Ellington & John Coltrane” (Impulse!), “Piano In The Foreground” (Columbia), or even less-known “The Pianist” (Fantasy).

私にとっては長らく “This One's For Blanton!” (Pablo) がそういうアルバムでした。 有名なアルバムですから愛聴されている方も多いでしょう。 かなり晩年の録音ですが、Ray Brown と寄りそう様に、この二人にしかなし得ない世界を表現しています。しかも御大 Ellington のパーカッシブなピアノが迫力充分な音質で堪能できる、まさにうってつけのアルバムです。しかし、ここ暫くはその地位を別のアルバムが奪いつつあります。

For me, “This One's For Blanton!” (Pablo) has been such an album for a long time. On this great album (in his very last period), Ellington plays duo with Ray Brown, and presents so wonderful world, which cannot be done by anybody else. Also, this album fully features Ellington's very percussive and powerful piano performances in very nice fidelity. I love this album so much. However, yet another album gradually replaces “This One's For Blanton!” album in my mind as a “Holy Grail album for Ellington's piano artistry”.
