昨年11月にここで紹介した Record Makers and Breakers - voices of the independent Rock 'n' Roll Pioneers - があまりにも面白いので最近再びハマってます。

もう通しで何回目かになりますが、毎日ちょっとづつ読んでは「おお〜」と声をあげ、うなりながら読んでます。

音楽およびそれにまつわる歴史という意味では、アーティスト、ミュージシャン、プロデューサ、エンジニアももちろんのこと、やはりアーティストと契約し、レコードを生産し、販売していた「レーベル」という側面からの切り口も絶対に欠かすことはできない 〜全てが複雑に絡み合っての音楽史〜 であるなーと、改めて思いが至っているところです。

いやはや、ほんまにおもろい。個人的リサーチ対象であるMercury レーベルについての情報もやはりてんこ盛りで、数年前から少しづつ手元で整理・書き溜めているマーキュリーレーベルのドキュメントにも、多数新しい視点と客観的情報を与えてくれます。

Saturday - I could have a precious time to be alone at home - without 'the destroyer' - my two-years-old daughter - so I could enjoy listening to several 78rpm records this afternoon. It was just fun indeed!

音楽のダウンロード販売も非常にポピュラーになってきたこのご時世、国内の音楽となると、さすがに LP での新譜リリースというのはほとんどみかけなくなりましたが、海外では音楽ジャンルによっては LP での同時リリースも (限定販売的であることが多いものの) 根強く残っているようです。

私の場合、LP でリリースされない音源を買わない、なんてことはさすがにありませんが、CD と LP の両方のフォーマットでリリースされると分かった盤については、躊躇なく LP で買ってしまいます。

それにしても、CD でも出ているのに、どうしていまさら LP の方で買ってしまいたくなるのか。

いろいろ事情がありまして、ここ1年以上、自分でもびっくりする程にめっきり購入ペースが落ち込んでいますが、これが今年1枚目の SP となりました (CD や LP を入れても今年 4枚目?)。1945年、マーキュリー・レコード が最初にリリースした記念すべき盤を、やっとこさ入手しました。

Nowadays I don't buy many vinyls, CDs and 78rpms like I used to do - which is very surprising for myself actually. Anyway here is the very first 78rpm I bought this year (the fourth one I got this year even including CDs and LPs?). Yes, this is the very first 78rpm release by Mercury Records way back in 1945.

Dear readers - sorry not to get this weblog updated often. It's been about six months since I put my last article here. I've been very busy taking care of my lovely daughter while working at home and I hardly managed to publish articles here. Anyway here I go.

After all these years, one of my best friends and an awesome Hammond organ player Eddie Landsberg is back on stage (on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Organ Jazz Club in Numabukuro, Nakano, Tokyo, Japan) with young and talented Japanese sidemen (Kyohei Yamamoto / 山本恭平 on electric guitar, and Kazumasa Oyamada / 小山田和正 on drums). I believe the new Eddie Landsberg Trio has many bright possibilities, although they need some more rehearsals. Definitely this band sounds the best among all the past live sessions by Eddie.

He must been jamming with the Godfather of Soul right now in heaven . . .

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago, I went to the centre of Kichijoji (where the nearest train station is located), and I dropped by a CD reseller shop where I seldom went. I found a steel basket filled with many CDs with 50% discount. So I picked up several CDs - this is one of them.

今年発売されたばかりの、この 2枚組 CD。なんといってもジャケットがイカしてます。 ボロボロになった SP アルバム を模した装丁で、最初に手にとった時には不良品かと勘違いしましたよ . . .

This double CD album, just released in this year, has very funny artwork here - take a look, it looks like a heavily worn-out 78rpm album binder! When I saw this artwork for the first time, I thought this copy is one of substandard products . . .

今回は名盤中の名盤、デルズ (The Dells) の “There Is” (オリジナルは 1968年3月リリース) です。私にとっては、James Brown、Otis Redding、Sam Cooke に続いて、ソウル方面への視野を広げるきっかけとなった思い出深いアルバムです。もともと CD で 15年以上前に購入し長らく親しんできましたが、昨年オリジナル盤 LP を入手する機会がありました。

Here is the definitive masterpiece album, originally released in March 1968, entitled “There Is” by The Dells. For me, it was such an album which opened my eyes wider toward the Soul music (others included James Brown, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke). I firstly listened to the album on CD more than 15 years ago. Since then I enjoyed listening to the CD version. And recently I could have a chance to obtain an original LP version.

もう100回以上は観たでしょうか。しかし 1回たりとも「見飽きた」と思わせぬ緊張度/怒涛の勢い/完成度を前に、毎度毎度腰を抜かされ感涙にむせぶばかり。一日も早く、オフィシャルな映像リリースが行われて欲しいと心から願うばかりです。

Probably I have watched this over a hundred of times, but because of the heavy tension, energy and perfection the film contains, I still have not get bored of watching - instead, every time I watch, I cannot help shed tears of gratitude. I sincerely hope from my heart, that the official release of this video is available as soon as possible . . .

公開する前に逝去されたのが個人的には残念でしたが、ともあれ、数ヵ月前からぽつぽつと書いて未公開だったのがこれです。

Personally I regret that this article (which I started writing a few months ago but not published yet) was not in time before her passaway - anyway here it is.

仕事の忙しい合間に、Mercury / Clef / Verve 時代「以前」の Krupa / Kenton 時代、Signature レーベルなどでのソロデビュー時代について、記事を準備していたところでした (最近はこの辺りの Anita がお気に入りで良く聴いていたんです) が、間に合いませんでした。合掌。

Although I had been so busy for my own job, I sometimes wrote an article dedicated to Anita O'Day in her early years, including Krupa/Kenton days, as well as her first solo recordings such on Signature label (recently I love to listen to her early years, actually). But it was late - her passaway came first. Rest In Peace, lady Anita . . .

突然ですが、ミュージシャンで「Hank なにがし」といえば、誰の名前を思い付きますか?

私が最初に思い付いたのは . . .

昨日 6月25日は WOWOW にて、来日40周年記念と銘打ってあれこれ Beatles 関連の放送があり、ハックに行き詰まりイライラとしていた私はリビングでボーッと観てしまいましたが。

例の「Concert For Bangla Desh」、過去に何度観たか分かりませんが、 Klaus Voormann のベース、Jim Keltner のドラムスが、 このコクのあるリズムを底辺で支えていることを再確認。

全曲やってくれるのか? という淡い期待を見事に粉砕された 「Live In Washington D.C. 1964」 は余りにも期待外れでしたが (たった 3曲だけかよ?!)、意外や意外、その直前に放送していたドキュメンタリー 「From Liverpool To San Francisco」 は、全然違う意味で見どころがありました。 本ドキュメンタリーでは、演奏シーンは一切出て来ず、 主にインタビューや報道フィルムなどで構成されているのですが . . .

以前の記事 で触れるのを忘れていた盤です。理屈抜きでカッチョエー。

A few months ago when I posted an article regarding Earl Bostic, Seya-san commented that “That's The Groovy Thing” was his favourite. Then I tried to find a copy for myself, and this is it (although I have this song on CD).

As many people already know, the famous organ player Billy Preston passed away on June 6th, at age 59. At least in Japan, so many blogs talks about his passaway, to say Rest In Peace to him and his music ever been created.

皆さん御存じの通り、ビリー・プレストン (Billy Preston) が 6月6日、59歳で逝去されました。日本ではあちこちのブログなどで彼の死について触れられており、彼の残した音楽への思いが綴られています。

It is very interesting on the other hand, that most people mention his name from the Beatles' standpoint - regarding him as the “5th Beatle”. Unfortunately, even after I know the fact he passed away, I didn't wish to listen to his famous works of Beatles-related context, such as “Get Back” sessions, or leader albums on Apple label. I don't even know why I didn't intend to give them a try.

その一方で非常に興味深いのは、多くの方々が彼のことについて紹介する際に、ビートルズ寄りの視点から触れているということです。いわく、“Get Back” セッションでの多大な貢献による「5人目のビートル」であったり、Apple レーベルでのリーダーアルバムであったり。しかし、彼の訃報を知った時に、私はなぜだかこのあたりの音源を聞こうとは思わなかったのでした。

今まで何百回となく耳にしてきた Delfonics (デルフォニックス) のこの名曲。
やっぱり何度聴いてもいいですねぇ。

Well, it's been a very long time since I published the very first article back in Nov. 2004 (entitled Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”). Here is the second article (by several friends' requests), talking all sorts of things about EmArcy label. コレクションを整理して、一部買い取りに出そうかな〜と作業をしていた時に、10年ほど聴いていない懐かしいアルバムに出会いました。はて、どんな内容だっけ、と、久し振りにターンテーブルに載せてみると、あれびっくり、こんなにゴキゲンな内容やったっけ?? ということで、10年越しで愛聴盤に昇格したと同時に、買い取りに出されるのを免れたのでした。

私が Isley Brothers を初めて聴いたのは、15年ほど前に購入した “It's Our Thing” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3001) でのこと。1969年当時、文句なしの全盛期を迎え黒人音楽の分野では完全に最先端を走っていた James Brown からの影響が濃厚な力強いファンクで溢れた、彼らののちの活躍を考えるとマイルストーン的なアルバムといえます。続く “The Brothers: Isley” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3002) や “Get Into Something” (T-Neck / Buddah TNS-3006) もグルーヴ溢れる力強いファンク系の作品として、聴き所満載です。この辺りでは今では最後の “Get Into Something” が一番好みです。 前作、前々作よりぐっとタイトで切れ味抜群なリズムセクションが曲によってセカンドラインを聴かせたり、なかなか面白い。

その後私は、最初期の “Shout”、“Twist And Shout” までさかのぼったり、セールス的に絶頂だった 3+3 時代のネチネチファンクととろけるバラードまで、ひととおり楽しむ様になりましたが、現在最も良くターンテーブルに載る機会が多いのは、過渡期とされる 1972年にリリースされた本アルバムです。

時代錯誤と揶揄されようとも信念を貫き通した、レトロマニアの愛すべき頑固親父。The La's の Lee Mavers と並び、1990年代初頭の UK インディーロックシーンで強烈な個性を発揮した The Stairs の Edgar Summertime。その彼が昨年 (本名の Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones 名義で) ソロアルバムを出していたことを最近になって知り、大急ぎで CD を購入しました。本当に最近の情報に疎くなってしまい、悲しいやら情けないやら . . .

Two lovable guys, hopelessly stubborn kinda individuals, perfection of anachronism - they are Lee Mavers (of The La's) and Edgar Summertime (of The Stairs), both of who left remarkable individualities in the UK Indie Rock scene in the early 1990s. Recently I happened to know Edgar Summertime released his first solo album (under his real name, Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones) in 2005, which is so astonishing and astounding. It's really awful and shameful to me that I know few things about recent music scene nowadays...

こう寒い日が続くと、鍋でも食いながら焼酎のお湯割りを呑んで体を温めないとやってられませんね。あ、僕が真夏以外は毎晩お湯割り呑みながら仕事してるのを知ってるそこの人、ツッコミ入れない様に!

It's been so cold these days - to get over such a chilled weather, have a dinner of hot pot food (“nabe ryouri” in Japanese - we Japanese love eating “nabe” dinner in the winter season), drinking shochu (Japanese distilled spirits) mixed with hot water ... Hey, hey! Please do not play a joke on me, even if you know I drink mixed shochu with hot water every night (except in the hot summer) !

音楽も同様。こんな寒い日には、とびっきりホットな音楽で体も心もあたためようではありませんか!

Same applies to listening to the music - let's enjoy damn hot music in such a cold season!

    

「ディスコグラフィーを鵜呑みにするな」という名言があります。調査開始の礎として非常に有用ですが、最終的には真偽を自分の耳で確かめ、現物を探して確認するのが王道だということでしょう。 著名なディスコグラファー Michel Ruppli さんの手による5巻組 The Mercury Labels - A Discography の第5巻のシングルリリース一覧には、どの盤が SP で出たのかマークがついているのですが、これが全くアテになりません。事実、以下に紹介するこの盤も、SP で出たというマークは記されていませんでした。

There is an reasonable saying “Do not blindly swallow any info on the discography books”. Discographies are very useful and valuable when using as a starting point of a specific research, but after all we have to find actual vinyls and give it a real listening. For example, Volume 5 of The Mercury Labels - A Discography (by a famous discographer Michel Ruppli) has numerical listings of entire 78rpm/45rpm releases, with marked abbreviations which indicates “issued on 78rpm and on 45rpm”, “issued on 45rpm only” etc. However, these marks doesn't seem to be trustworthy: actually, this 78rpm (introduced here below) is NOT marked as “issued also on 78rpm”.

この2枚組アルバムを購入するのは実は 2組目です。昨年夏に某所で購入したのですが、1枚目の LP にヒビが入っていた (しかも seller は交換に応じてくれなかった...とほほ) ため、もう 1組買う羽目になったのでした。

This is my 2nd copy I obtained recently - I bought the 1st copy in last summer at a certain auction site, but when I received the parcel, I noticed that the disc 1 was broken during the transit (what was worse, the seller completely ignored my e-mail to ask him for return...). So I had to find and buy another copy which was actually playable.

Grant Green (グラント・グリーン) のアルバムを辿っていくと、必ずオルガンプレーヤー人脈を追うことになりますが、名門 Blue Note レーベル上では 1962年 5月 9日の Lou Donaldson の BLP-4108 / BST-84108 (“The Natural Soul”) から 1966年 4月29日の BLP-4229 / BST-84229 (“Got A Good Thing Goin'”) まで長らく付き合うことになる John Patton (ジョン・パットン) との相性の良さはずば抜けているといえましょう。御大 Lou Donaldson のバックを勤める前から Grant Green や Ben Dixon とは演奏してきた仲だったという話を裏付けるかの様に、フレーズも含めて、息はぴったりとあっています。

Grant Green とのコンビを解消したあとも、John Patton さんは 1970年代前半までコンスタントにアルバムを録音していきました。
