Google Books 上で The Billboard （米「ビルボード」誌）のバックナンバーが1942年のものからほぼ全て閲覧可能になっています。これにより、レーベル、レコード製造、アーティストの動向など、当時のレコード業界のさまざまな側面の歴史を調査するのが格段に楽になりました。これまでは、図書館のような施設で閲覧したり、目星をつけた号を古本屋やオンラインオークションで購入するしかなかったのですから、コンピュータ上でネットワーク越しに検索しながら目当ての記事を閲覧できるというのは、隔世の感があります。

Almost all back issues of The Billboard magazine (since 1942) is searchable and browsable on Google Books website. This enables us to do very convenient research through the web, on history of record labels, record production, artists and many other topics on record industries in the past. Previously we had to go to libaries to look for specific back issues, or we had to look for and buy them at second hand bookstores or at online auctions.

今回は、マイクログルーヴレコード黎明期の「コロンビア対RCAヴィクター」 「33 1/3 対 45」回転数競争あたりからはじめて、諸説入り乱れて解釈が分かれている「EP」というタームについて、過去の資料を探ってみましょう。Wikipedia 日本語版 では 33 1/3回転7インチ盤である、と書かれている EP盤ですが、それは 誤り で、あくまで45回転7インチ盤の一種である、ということがお分かり頂けるかと思います。

This time I am looking up some back issues, to what the term “EP” originally stood for - the term sometimes has been misunderstood (and there has been various opinions on it). So let's get started with the old 1948 article on the “Speed Battle” - 33 1/3 v.s. 45, Columbia v.s. RCA Victor.

フランキー・レイン (Frankie Laine) さんが 6日、心不全の為 93歳で亡くなったそうです。大往生といっていいのかもしれません。

Mr. Frankie Laine died on 6th of February, of heart failure. He was 93 years old - I hope it was a natural and peaceful death.

ショパン (Frédéric François Chopin) のワルツ集 . . . 音楽に全く興味のない人でも、必ず何曲かは耳にしたことがあるはず。少しでもピアノを習ったことがある人なら、何曲かは弾いたことがあるはず。そして弾き手の解釈によってその表情が余りにも変化してしまう、本当に 難しい 曲集。

Piano Waltzes by Frédéric François Chopin . . . which have been very popular even among people who don't have interests in music at all . . . anyone who had learnt playing classical piano ever had a chance to play a Chopin Waltz or two . . . and what's most important, these fourteen Waltzes are very difficult to play - every pianist play Chopin Waltzes based on interpretations of their own, and every performance shows variety of diversity.

Norah Jones を含む5人のメンバーが、カントリーの渋い名曲 (と数曲のオリジナル曲) を今風にアレンジして好評の Little Willies。ちょうど、Norah のセカンドアルバム “Feels Like Home” のテイストをベースに更にカントリー寄りにアプローチしてみせたサウンド (Norah の片腕 Lee Alexander のお蔭でしょうか) は、改めて好感が持てるものと言えます。Norah が2曲でゲスト参加している、 Joel Harrison の 2003年リリースのアルバム “Free Country” (ACT [Germany] 9319-2) での、ジャンルを越えた自由闊達な再構築 (*1) (それがあのアルバムの良さなんですけどね) とは異なり、本アルバムのカヴァー曲は基本的に原曲のムードとテンポを遵守しており (とはいえ完全コピーではありません)、そこに「あの」現代的な響き〜透明感のあるアコースティックなサウンド〜を付加する、という方向性がみてとれます。

(*1)： とはいっても、Norah Jones 参加の2曲 “I Walk The Line” と “Tennessee Waltz” では、やはりあのスローテンポでムーディなアレンジメントが施されており、この 2曲については Norah のソロアルバムと同じテイストで楽しむことが出来ます。残りの楽曲は本当に面白い。ジャズっぽく、ロックっぽく、ときにはニューウェーブ的なニュアンスも交えながら、あらゆる曲がバラエティ豊かに再構築されていく様はスリリングでさえあります。

... this article is dedicated to my (personal) melancholic memory for Sagittarius' LP “Present Tense” when I was a teenager. And the English version of this article (probably) will not be available.

中学二年生の時 (1984) に 〜まだその頃は北九州に住んでいましたが〜 Beatles との衝撃的な出会い (*1) をして以来、少ない小遣いを工面しつつ物凄い勢いで LP やシングルを買っていたあの頃。静岡に引っ越し、高校に進学する頃には、すでに別テイクやミックス違いの類はほぼ全て手元に揃うまでになり、ブート LP などにも手を出し始めていたのですが、ある時ふと疑問がよぎりました。こんなに来る日も来る日も Beatles ばっかり聴いている俺はアホちゃうか? なんで他の音楽を聴こうとしないんやろう?

V.A. 特集 第3回 から随分間があいてしまいました。今回は、レーベルの枠も越えて出された Various ものの中で特に興味深いリリースを紹介します。 あの Playboy 誌の企画から生まれた 2枚組です。

学生時代にイヤという程聴き込んだ懐かしのアルバム達。何年か振りに久し振りに聴いてみると、昔抱いた印象と随分違うものも少なくありません。昔は気付かなかった新たな魅力に気付くもの (実際はこれが多いのですが) もあれば、「あれ、こんなんだっけ?」と拍子抜けしてしまうものもあったり。先日、懐かしさのあまりオリジナル盤 (一応両面マトリクス 1A です) を見つけてつい買ってしまったこのアルバム、私にとっては (どういうわけか) 後者に属するものでした。そんなこともあるもんですねぇ。

There are dearly beloved albums which I listened to so many times when I was still young - after long years I sometimes have a chance to listen to such albums again. Some LPs give me yet another fascinations I did not notice a long ago, while some others will not show me magical charms anymore. Unfortunately, this album (of which I found and bought the original pressing with 1A matrix on both sides) belongs to the latter case - it's what happens anyhow.

しかしなぁ、なーんかイマイチ購買欲をそそらないのはなんでやろう。全20枚 (10枚づつに分けて販売) いっぺんに買うしか入手方法がない (しかも合計 81,900円!) とか、音質について「180g 重量盤」としか表記がないとか、Columbia 時代の Miles だと過去のリリース枚数が多いため、比較的安価でオリジナル盤を入手可能であるとか、そういったことなんでしょうが。これ、果たして売れるのかしら。どうもあんまり売れない様な気が...

However, it won't make me feel “I am dying to buy the box” - because it's too expensive? (81,900 YEN in total!) - or buying all 20 LPs is the only way to get 'em? (we can't buy each LP individually from Sony Music) - or “180g vinyl” is the only description about sound quality? - or getting Miles' original Columbia LPs is rather easy in reasonable price (compared with other very scarce Jazz LPs) - I don't know the real reason, anyway I do NOT think this huge LP box will sell well...
