Almost all back issues of The Billboard magazine (since 1942) is searchable and browsable on Google Books website. This enables us to do very convenient research through the web, on history of record labels, record production, artists and many other topics on record industries in the past. Previously we had to go to libaries to look for specific back issues, or we had to look for and buy them at second hand bookstores or at online auctions.

今回は、マイクログルーヴレコード黎明期の「コロンビア対RCAヴィクター」 「33 1/3 対 45」回転数競争あたりからはじめて、諸説入り乱れて解釈が分かれている「EP」というタームについて、過去の資料を探ってみましょう。Wikipedia 日本語版 では 33 1/3回転7インチ盤である、と書かれている EP盤ですが、それは 誤り で、あくまで45回転7インチ盤の一種である、ということがお分かり頂けるかと思います。

This time I am looking up some back issues, to what the term “EP” originally stood for - the term sometimes has been misunderstood (and there has been various opinions on it). So let's get started with the old 1948 article on the “Speed Battle” - 33 1/3 v.s. 45, Columbia v.s. RCA Victor.

It's already been over five years since I posted the first part of the EmArcy article (sorry still available in Japanese only) - sorry for that. Several people have contacted and asked me when would the next part available - this month I managed to have spare time to write it - part 2 of the EmArcy article - including further research on various things. And now it's finally available public.

This part 2 (in Japanese only yet) features the release period of EmArcy titles, as well as checkpoints for identifying original issues of EmArcy 16000 (45/78 rpm), 26000 (10inch LP) and 36000 (12inch LP) series.

次回の後編では、EmArcy と関わりの深い傍系レーベル、ウィング (Wing) の話と、第1次 EmArcy 終焉の1959年以降のお話を書く予定です。

The following part 3 (last part) that I am going to start writing in the near future, will feature stories around the Wing subsidiary label, and the EmArcy brand after it became less active in 1959.

The other day I happend to find the very article that identifies the period when Norman Granz stopped distribution contract with Mercury label and started his own Clef label - I found this while I was looking for info on other research topics... I knew it was in 1953 after my past research, but I wanted to identify more precise period of when the Mercury-Clef transition was conducted.

ジャズ、特に全盛期のモダンジャズが大好きな方であれば、伝説の録音エンジニア ロイ・デュナン 氏の名前はもちろんご存知だと思います。最初はキャピトルレーベル（〜1956年）で、続いてコンテンポラリーレーベル（1956年〜1960年代前半）で、数えきれない程の名盤とうたわれる素晴らしいレコーディングに携わってこられた方です。

フランク・ザッパ（主に Burnt Weeny Sandwich とか Weasels Ripped My Flesh とか Yellow Shark 辺り）、 セロニアス・モンク（主に Prestigeレーベル時代 のをSPとかLPとかで）、 デューク・エリントン （主に1920年代〜1930年代頃のホットな奴をSPとかCDとかで）、 ジェームス・ブラウン （驚くことに尊師JBの音源はどれをかけてもお気に入りのようです）、 ジョン・ゾーン （特にお気に入りは 「The Circle Maker: Zevulun」 の模様） その他いろいろ。

要は私が普段聴いている音楽ということですが。もちろん 子供向け音楽 もかけたりしますし、娘なりのお気に入りはいろいろあるようですが、 「スナッキーで踊ろう」にハマりまくって踊りながら全コーラス歌ったり、最近では「Heroes And Villains」のいろんなパートをつぎつぎ鼻歌で歌っていたり（笑）と、みているだけでかなり面白いです。

エレクトロニカ風ポップもかなりお気に入りの様子。Guther なども自作のダンスを踊りながらエセ英語で歌詞をつけるありさまです。今年に入ってからは、私の長年のお気に入りレーベルのひとつである MORR からの作品、Pascal Pinon にハマってくれたようで、これをかけていると本人も相当心地よさそうにしています。ある意味で、子供向け音楽と言えるかもしれません。

In those articles I mentioned this 78 rpm - New Jazz 80.001 - was the very first release from the New Jazz label (later became Prestige label) back in 1949, later reissued as New Jazz 808 and Prestige 808. This time I could luckily obtain the copy of 80.001 - 62 years old.

そのエントリの中で、New Jazz 80.001 が、New Jazz レーベル（のちの Prestige レーベル）によって最初にリリースされた盤であり、のちに New Jazz 808 あるいは Prestige 808 として再発された、と触れました。リリースは1949年、もう62年も前に製造された盤ということになります。今回その盤を入手することができました。

もうひと月以上前になりますが、ジャズSPレコードの大先輩というか師匠というか尊師というか、つくばにあるその方のお宅に伺いました。数千枚以上もある膨大なSPコレクターにして戦前ジャズの熱心な研究で知られる 瀬谷徹 さんです。

We had a great time, discussing about old Jazz, listening to great Jazz sounds with his amazing audio equipment - an old tube amp, RCA professional 16-inch turntable, Jensen field speaker from 1930s and more - (believe me he's not that snobbish, but he's just a dilligent music enthusiast) - the first one we enjoyed was this record - 16-inch US Navy Transcription 33rpm record, featuring June Christy, Shelly Manne etc. Other 78rpms we enjoyed so much today includes Django Reinhardt, The Spirits Of Rhythm, Chick Webb, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday, Meade Lux Lewis and many more that I was like in heaven...

その先輩のお宅でふたり、時を忘れて音楽の話題で盛り上がりつつ極上の音楽を楽しみました。この、16インチ放送局用レコードもかけられる業務用プレーヤーでまず聞かせてもらったのはジューン・クリスティとシェリー・マンを含む米海軍向け16インチトランスクリプション。その後もジャンゴ・ラインハルト、チック・ウェブ、コールマン・ホーキンス、ビリー・ホリディ、ミード・ルクス・ルイス、その他数え切れない程の戦前ジャズを、オリジナルのSP盤で、真空管アンプと戦前に作られたモノラルスピーカーで堪能させて頂きました。帰宅したあともしばらく余韻がさめやらないほど夢見心地の一日となりました。

以前、ウィリー・ブライアント (Willie Bryant) のSP盤「Mary Had A Little Lamb」（A面は「Cross Patch」）について 記事 を載せたことがありました。両面とも大好きなのですが、その時に、他のミュージシャンによる両曲の演奏にはどんなものがあるんやろう、といろいろ探していたときに、ファッツ・ウォーラー (Fats Waller) バージョンの「Cross Patch」に出会い、そのあまりの美しさとメランコリックでいてかわいらしい演奏に魅了されました。つい先日、やっとSP盤で入手することができました。

Maybe the most famous “unreleased” album ever - “SMiLE” by The Beach Boys. There has been so many rumors and announcements in the past about releasing the SMiLE era outtakes in one package. The oldest attempt to finish the Smile album known so far was in 1973. Later in 1988 another attempt was made to release SMiLE materials.

で、今回も「Smile Sessions」が出る出ると話題になっていますが、さて本当に出るのでしょうか。予想通り当初の予定からは遅れつつあるようで、現時点での最新情報では2011年8月9日リリースとのことです。

Recently yet another announcement was made that the “Smile Sessions” will be released in 2011 - the release date was slated again several times, but anyway the most recent news says it will be out on August 9, 2011.

先月、そのリリースの予告編として、“Good Vibrations” と “Heroes And Villains” をカップリングした10インチアナログがリリースされました。なんと 78回転 です。

Last month an interesting title was released, probably as a trailer of the Smile Sessions - double 10-inch vinyl release, coupling “Good Vibrations” and “Heroes And Villains”, on microgroove 78 rpm!

In my humble opinion, the most interesting part of this album is NOT the fact that all members of The Rolling Stones plays on this album, but how the leader Ben Waters interprets good old Boogie Woogie / R&B tunes connected to the late Ian Stewart... I bought the limited 2LP edition of the album (with bonus tracks).

It was on February 3, 1932 when the oldest stereo recording known to exist was waxed (although it was not an "intended stereo recording" but an "accidental stereo recording") - a seven minute medley by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra.

My family and I are safe. We in Tokyo had the earthquake on March 11, 2011, but the situation was NOT critical and serious. As a matter of fact, all of my LPs, 78rpms, CDs, audio component or whatever are intact, fortunately. My daughter and I was at home when the huge earthquake hits Eastern Japan. Only a few things fell onto the floor - a toaster in the kitchen, many books and cardboard boxes in my home working room, some decorating parts of Hinamatsuri dolls in the living room. Anyway we are safe.

I just can't help sending my prayers to the people in the Tohoku region where the critical earthquake and Tsunami hit, and who have been waiting for help and spending inconvinent days at refuge.

Even in Tokyo, many people here have been facing some difficulties in everyday life since the "3.11" - scheduled blackouts, train service being reduced because of the blackouts, some people rushing to supermarkets and gas stations, various false rumors making people uncertain and anxious, etc., etc... People have been even complaining that many of Japanese TV programs and newspapers don't provide reliable and appropriate information to us.

But we will never give up. we never forget smile, peace of mind, courage and bravery.

Do you know the famous Japanese song "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto? The original title is 上を向いて歩こう ("Ue Wo Muite Arukou", "I Look Up When I Walk"). We will keep looking up. We will never walk alone.
