いつかは欲しいと思ってたLP、やっと手に入りました。
カリフォルニア州パサデナ All Saints Church で1975年に録音された本作、パイプオルガンを 1965年製 DEC PDP-8 (!) で自動演奏したものです。

Rhythm Machine
オリジナル LP はマイナーレーベルから出たレア盤（Lulu 6072-25）らしいのですが、2012年にCD化されたので、いまでは比較的気軽に聴くことができます。
ファンク系あり、モロに1970年代マーヴィン・ゲイ風味あり、スウィート系あり。バラエティ豊かな楽曲群。
それ以上に、この時代にしては珍しく、調律の合っていないピアノ。ゆらぎまくりでグルーヴ感を台無しにするドラムス。
どこまでもB級で、どこまでも憎めないこの作品。21世紀のいま聴くと逆に新鮮なのが面白いです。
Meditation / Toshiko Akiyoshi Quartet
30年間に渡って活躍されたビッグバンドを 2003年に解散、その後は主にソロピアノで活動されている 穐吉 (秋吉) 敏子 さん。最近はカルテットでの活動を再開され、この 3月にはレコーディングも兼ねたライブ演奏が行われました (私は残念ながら観に行くことが出来ませんでしたが)。長らく日本の第一人者として国内外で活躍し、今なお貪欲な創作意欲を失わないその姿勢には、ただただひれ伏すばかりです。
Toshiko Akiyoshi (“穐吉 敏子” in Japanese) has been the most active and most influencial Jazz player in Japan, who led her own big band for thirty years (in Dec. 2003, the band played its final concert in New York). Since then, she has performed solo piano/quartet concerts (with his husband Lew Tabackin). As a Jazz lover, I cannot help admiring her continuous efforts and infinite artistry as a Jazz musician.

言うまでもなく、ジャズドラムの可能性を極限まで引き出し、新たな世界を確立することに成功した巨人 Max Roach。戦後ジャズ史に燦然と輝く多数の名演奏を残した Brown=Roach Quintet 時代や、1960年代のアメリカという時代を反映した諸作に勢い評価が傾きがちですが、1970年代以降の作品にも注目すべき作品は少なくありません。
The Jazz Giant Max Roach was, of course, one of the most important Jazz drummers who explored the possibilities of drumming. His greatest works include legendary Brown=Roach Quintet, and his numerous works in the 1960s which reflects the atmosphere of the 1960’s USA. However in the 1970s, he recorded several albums which were also far above his average.

Jazz Impressions of Japan (無言歌) / Jim Hall
1976年の来日時に、こんな素晴らしい演奏とアルバムを残して下さった ジム・ホール (Jim Hall) トリオに感謝すると同時に、彼らにこのアルバム制作のきっかけを与えた日本という国を、我々はもっと誇りに思うべきでしょう。
We Japanese must deeply thank to the Jim Hall Trio, who left such a great performance on this album (recorded in 1976 during their live tour to Japan). Also, we must be very proud of this country Japan, where Jim Hall had so many impressions which was definitely a fundamental background of this album.
