2008年6月1日にハリウッドのユニヴァーサル・スタジオで起きた火災により、1930年代〜1950年代の貴重なメタルマスターやマスターテープが多数消失した可能性が高まってきたそうです。

“A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, June 1, 2008” (quoted from Reuters.com news article), and there is a new rumor (or confirmation) coming that the fire consumed invaluable/historical metal masters and master tapes back from 1930s-1950s.

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put 'em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach's other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

その筋 (?) のファンには有名なジャズシンガー セルマ・グレーセン (Thelma Gracen) と、泣く子も黙る偉大なロック/ポップアーティスト ポール・マッカートニー (Paul McCartney)。この二人を結ぶ意外な繋がりについてご存知でしょうか?

I have introduced various old record catalogues in my previous articles (see “Old Record Catalogues” articles, Part 1, 2, 3 and 4, although they are currently written only in Japanese), and some articles also featured qutations from disc reviews and ads on Down Beat magazine back issues which I have. Actually it's always fun and interesting to read from pages to pages, ads to ads, reviews to reviews - such magazines and newspapers of many many years ago still delivers atmosphere of that era, working like “time capsules” of when Jazz was one of the driving forces in the Popular music. Other than that, they are full of invaluable information which is very useful for discographic purpose.

最近ここに書いたエントリでは、古いレコードカタログを紹介してきました。それらのエントリ中で、ダウンビート 誌のバックナンバーからディスクレビューや広告などを引用することもありました。実際、こういう古い音楽雑誌を読むというのは、非常に面白く興味深いものがあります。全ての記事、広告、レビューなど、そのどれもが、あたかも タイムカプセル の様に、ポピュラー音楽においてジャズが重要な位置を占めていた昔の息吹を感じさせてくれます。そして、ディスコグラフィー的に非常に参考になる情報であふれています。

Part 1 (Bethlehem, Fantasy, Pacific Jazz)、 Part 2 (Roost, Atlantic, Blue Note)、 Part 3 (Riverside) に続く第4回は、1956年発行の、とある有名なジャズレーベルのカタログです。 今回は SP やシングル盤もばっちり掲載されている、いかにも過渡期らしいものです。

一月ほど前、所用で吉祥寺駅近辺に行ったときのこと。普段は滅多に寄ることのない CD 量販店をふらっと訪れ、運良く 50% 引きセールをやっているカゴを見つけたので、いくつかピックアップしました。これもその 1枚 (1ボックス?) です。

About a month ago, I went to the centre of Kichijoji (where the nearest train station is located), and I dropped by a CD reseller shop where I seldom went. I found a steel basket filled with many CDs with 50% discount. So I picked up several CDs - this is one of them.

みなさんが Vee-Jay (ヴィー・ジェイ) レーベルと聞いて思い出されるのはどんなアーティストでしょうか。ロックファンならば、The Beatles (ビートルズ) のアメリカにおける最初の LP を思い浮かべられるでしょうし、ジャズファンだったら Lee Morgan (リー・モーガン) や Wynton Kelly (ウィントン・ケリー)、Wayne Shorter (ウェイン・ショーター) のリーダー作などが思いつくかもしれません。

Which artist(s) comes in your mind after you hear the label name Vee-Jay ? If you are a Rock fan, The Beatles comes first, since this famous band released US first LP album on the Vee-Jay label; if you are a Jazz fan, such nice leader albums by Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly or Wayne Shorter may come in your mind.

Part 1 (Bethlehem, Fantasy, Pacific Jazz) に続きましては、今度は少しばかり古めの奴をいってみましょう。1941年〜1955年のカタログ 4種類です。

bassclef さん のところの 「Jazz On The Bounce (bel canto)」 というエントリ。ここのコメントで、SP、10インチLP、12インチLP、シングル盤、EP などの価格についての話題がありました。

何年か前に、たまたま古いカタログパンフレット (いろんな時期のいろんなレーベルのミックス) をロットで買う機会がありまして、bassclef さんのところに書いたのも、それらを一部参考にしました。せっかくなので、なにかの参考になればと思い、何回かに分けて紹介してみようと思います。

新年を迎えたというのに、ここの更新もままならず。本格復帰にはもう暫くかかりそうです。

公開する前に逝去されたのが個人的には残念でしたが、ともあれ、数ヵ月前からぽつぽつと書いて未公開だったのがこれです。

Personally I regret that this article (which I started writing a few months ago but not published yet) was not in time before her passaway - anyway here it is.

以前の記事 でも書いた通り、愛して止まない Stairs と Edgar Jones (aka Edgar Summertyme)。その Stairs が 1991年〜1992年、唯一のアルバム “Mexican R ‘N’ B” 以外にリリースした 4枚のマキシシングル には、アルバム未収録曲が多く収録されているだけでなく、1960年代ガレージロックファンなら思わずニヤリとしてしまうカヴァー曲もあり、アルバム同様に聴き逃せません。幻のセカンドアルバムの音源を含むデモ音源集「Right In The Back Of Your Mind」も今年リリースされたことですし、是非 CD 化を!

As I mentioned in the past article, I love The Stairs and Edgar Jones (aka Edgar Summertyme) so much. The Stairs released four maxi singles in 1991-1992, as well as their only album. The maxi singles contains innevitable tracks which cannot be heard on the album. Also, they contains cover versions of very scarce 1960s garage rock bands. I sincerely hope all recordings by The Stairs will be reissued on CD! Now is the time, I believe, simply because Edgar Jones released his first solo album last year, and the album “Right In The Back Of Your Mind” is out now.

アンプを修理に出して はや 6日。かなり辛くなってきました。

PC 上で CD を再生し、そこから流れてくる貧弱な音を聴きつつ、脳内補間修正して楽しむというのはかなり大変な労力を要します。とはいえ、イマジネーションや記憶力を駆使しないといけないので、これはこれで楽しいような気も。いや、楽しい様な気がするなんて思ってきてるのは末期症状なのかも。ヤヴァイ。

SP や LP のレーベルを眺めながら、PC に向かって貧弱な音を聴く。

早くこの悲惨な状況を脱したいものです。

It's been over four years since I firstly opened the site dedicated to Mercury records. The most delightful thing for me has been that various musicians, their relatives, producers or even engineers kindly contacted me by e-mail. They have told me so many invaluable information. I really thank for that.

あっちのサイト を公開して 4年強、一番嬉しいのは、レコードを吹き込んだ御本人やそのご家族、あるいはプロデューサ、エンジニアといった方々からメールを受け取ることです。過去にそういった方々から数多くの問い合わせを頂き、メールでお話しさせてもらい、多くの情報を提供して下さいました。本当に感謝感謝です。

Well, this is the part 3 of the “Less-known 45rpm” article (previous articles are: The Changing Times and Gary Knight 45rpms). This 45rpm, which contains pretty girly-pop tracks, was recorded by a seldom-known girl group of four, who left this 45rpm only. Of course, there is few information about this 45rpm and the group. But recently, a certain person e-mailed me about this 45rpm, and he kindly let me know the member of the band. Then luckily I could have a contact to Deborah Rubin-san (who was the member of the band), and we exchanged e-mails several times. The following interview is a result of editing such e-mails (with kind permission by Deborah-san). Now let's enjoy the less-known 45rpm, and the very interesting story (here for the first time?) behind the record!

さて、 The Changing Times、 Gary Knight に続いて紹介する「マイナーなシングル」シリーズ第3弾の本盤ですが、この 1枚しか録音を残していない、4人組女性グループのかわいらしいガールポップです。このグループについては全くといっていい程情報がありませんでした。それが最近、ある方からのメールにより、元メンバーの Deborah Rubin さんとコンタクトをとることが出来まして、何度かメールでやりとりをしました。以下、そのメールを元に、(Deborah さんの許可をとって) インタビュー形式にまとめなおしたものです。歴史に埋もれた一枚のシングル、それにまつわる貴重な話 (本邦初公開、いや、世界初公開?) を以下お楽しみ下さい。

Norah Jones を含む5人のメンバーが、カントリーの渋い名曲 (と数曲のオリジナル曲) を今風にアレンジして好評の Little Willies。ちょうど、Norah のセカンドアルバム “Feels Like Home” のテイストをベースに更にカントリー寄りにアプローチしてみせたサウンド (Norah の片腕 Lee Alexander のお蔭でしょうか) は、改めて好感が持てるものと言えます。Norah が2曲でゲスト参加している、 Joel Harrison の 2003年リリースのアルバム “Free Country” (ACT [Germany] 9319-2) での、ジャンルを越えた自由闊達な再構築 (*1) (それがあのアルバムの良さなんですけどね) とは異なり、本アルバムのカヴァー曲は基本的に原曲のムードとテンポを遵守しており (とはいえ完全コピーではありません)、そこに「あの」現代的な響き〜透明感のあるアコースティックなサウンド〜を付加する、という方向性がみてとれます。

(*1)： とはいっても、Norah Jones 参加の2曲 “I Walk The Line” と “Tennessee Waltz” では、やはりあのスローテンポでムーディなアレンジメントが施されており、この 2曲については Norah のソロアルバムと同じテイストで楽しむことが出来ます。残りの楽曲は本当に面白い。ジャズっぽく、ロックっぽく、ときにはニューウェーブ的なニュアンスも交えながら、あらゆる曲がバラエティ豊かに再構築されていく様はスリリングでさえあります。

Well, it's been a very long time since I published the very first article back in Nov. 2004 (entitled Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”). The year 2005 passed so fast, and here comes the next year 2006 already. I sincerely hope you'll have another nice year as vinyl/music collectors.

昨年1年間は、コレクターとしてはあまり成果があった年とはいえませんでしたが、またまたいろんな音楽に出会うことができました。振り返って個人的ベスト 5 (プラス、番外編) を列挙してみましょう。

Speaking of myself, the year 2005 was not the best one as a collector, but there are several “great” acquisitions as well as finding a great music. Here is my own “best five” (plus an extra title) ...

レコードコレクターにもいろんなタイプがある訳で、著名なミュージシャンの、評価が高くびっくりする程高価なオリジナル盤を買い漁る人 (骨董品コレクター的な人と言えるでしょう)もいれば、人知れず埋もれた安くてほとんど知られていない盤の中から自分のお気に入りの音楽を「発見」して悦に入る人 (強いて言えば「オタク系」でしょうかね)　もいます。金にものを言わせる前者だけのコレクター諸氏は個人的には正直苦手 (音楽聴いてんだか「もの」を買ってるんだかよう分からんやないですか。そういう手合いに限って、聴いてる音楽のジャンルや対象が狭くて、音楽の話をしても全然おもろないし) ですが、まあ人それぞれ両者のバランスをとって楽しんでいるのでしょう。

それはさておき、特に後者の愉しみというのは本当に格別なものがあります。なにしろ、星の数ほども世の中に残っている盤の中から、聞いたこともないグループやミュージシャンのシングルを格安で拾いあげ、祈るような気持ちでターンテーブルに乗せて、流れてくる音楽がストライクゾーンだったときの喜びといったら! その楽曲が、そのミュージシャンが、世間でどういう評価をされていようが (あるいはされてなかろうが)、巷では有名であろうが無名であろうが、買って聴く自分自身にとっては新しいものであり、良さを「発見」したことに他ならないのですからね。また、今の世の中、web であれリサーチ本であれ、こういったマイナーなミュージシャンの情報を探すことだって出来ます。安値で買って、聴いて気に入って (まぁ期待外れのものも少なからずあるわけですが)、調べてなお唸ることが出来る。なんてリーズナブルな悦楽でありましょう。

というわけで (?) このサイトでも、私がそうやって購入してきたシングル盤を思いついた時に紹介していこうと思います。ただ、私の あっちのサイト との関係上、そのレーベルのものが多くなってしまいますが、ご了承下さい。

1954年10月にリリースを開始した EmArcy レーベルでは、当初シングル盤 (45回転と 78回転) もリリースされていました。これらの中にはシングルオンリーでしか日の目をみなかった音源がいくつかあるのですが、これもその 1枚です (1954年 3月24日録音)。後に “The Complete Art Blakey on EmArcy” (日本フォノグラム 195J-10085) という LP に (同セッションの未発表曲 2曲と共に) 収録されました。A面の “In The Basement” は実にカッコいいハードバップです (パーソネルはレーベル写真を参照)。録音も実に素晴らしいガッツのあるものです。

EmArcy label, the most famous subsidiary of the Mercury label, was started in October 1954. In the very early era, EmArcy also had a number of 78rpm/45rpm single releases which faded out soon. Some of the releases contain invaluable tracks which can be heard only on these single releases. This Art Blakey's 45rpm (recorded on March 24, 1954) is one of such discs - both tracks can be heard on this 45rpm and equivalent 78rpm only (later Nippon Phonogram released the LP “The Complete Art Blakey on EmArcy”, 195J-10085, which contained these tracks as well as previously-unreleased tracks). The A-side track “In The Basement” is one of the finest hard-bop tracks (see the label photo for the personnel). Recording quality is also supreme - very powerful indeed.

しかし、この曲でかなりカッチョええテナーをブリブリとかましているミュージシャン、Henry Durant なる人については何も情報が分かりません。1954年〜1955年にごくわずかのレコーディングセッションに顔を出しただけで、その後表にはでてこられていない様です。

On these tracks, we can hear way-cool tenor saxophone player whose name is Henry Durant. Unfortunately there are few information on him available. As far as I know he appeared on a few recording sessions in circa 1954-1955.

この Henry Durant なるテナーサックスプレーヤーについて何か情報を御存じの方がおられましたら、是非御教授下さい。
