土曜日、奇跡的に自宅で一人の時間が少し生じたので、ハカイダーの心配をすることなく (笑) SP 盤を久し振りに聴くことが出来ました。きもちえがったー。

Saturday - I could have a precious time to be alone at home - without 'the destroyer' - my two-years-old daughter - so I could enjoy listening to several 78rpm records this afternoon. It was just fun indeed!

いろいろ事情がありまして、ここ1年以上、自分でもびっくりする程にめっきり購入ペースが落ち込んでいますが、これが今年1枚目の SP となりました (CD や LP を入れても今年 4枚目?)。1945年、マーキュリー・レコード が最初にリリースした記念すべき盤を、やっとこさ入手しました。

Nowadays I don't buy many vinyls, CDs and 78rpms like I used to do - which is very surprising for myself actually. Anyway here is the very first 78rpm I bought this year (the fourth one I got this year even including CDs and LPs?). Yes, this is the very first 78rpm release by Mercury Records way back in 1945.

Sad, traggic, depressing news for us old music enthusiasts...

2008年6月1日にハリウッドのユニヴァーサル・スタジオで起きた火災により、1930年代〜1950年代の貴重なメタルマスターやマスターテープが多数消失した可能性が高まってきたそうです。

“A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, June 1, 2008” (quoted from Reuters.com news article), and there is a new rumor (or confirmation) coming that the fire consumed invaluable/historical metal masters and master tapes back from 1930s-1950s.

It's been nearly one year since I bought used vinyls and 78rpms last, but here it is now, my new acquisition - (I hope) I won't be back rapidly to the centre of the “the road to vinyl/shellac junkies” (I hope and pray, actually), anyway it's a kind of rehabilitation for me, buying a single 78rpm in last eleven months . . .

最後に LP や SP を買ってから、はや1年近く経過しましたが、ついに禁を破ってこの1枚 〜 もう以前の様に「ヴィニール / シェラックジャンキーへの道」へ戻らないでいたいものです (ホントにそうなればいいんですが)。ともあれリハビリ的にこの1枚、久しぶりに買ってしまいました。

以前 4mil バージョンしかないことを残念に思った (その時、メーカさんには「ぜひ 3mil バージョンもお願いします」とメールで切々と訴えておいたのですが) 音のエジソン の SP 用モノーラルカートリッジ。瀬谷さん から教えてもらったのですが、ついに 3mil バージョンも正式に販売されることになったようです。

While ago I wrote an article about Otono Edison monaural cartridge for 78rpms. When I wrote that article, there was only 4mil version available, while most of the 78rpms from “golden age” plays best with 3mil needle tip. So when I bought the cartridge, I wrote several e-mails to the company that they should sell 3mil version as well. Then in 2008, Otono-Edison finally decided to sell 3mil version as well as 4mil version - thanks Seya-san for letting me know.

しかし、5月に引越ししてから、まだ一度も SP 盤を聴いていません。ゆっくり音楽を聴く時間がまだとれずにいることもありますし、前の住まいより周りがあまりにも静かなので十分な音量で聴くのがためらわれる、というのもあります。最大の理由は、引越し後のどたばたで、SP がすぐに手の届かない場所にいってしまったためです . . . 時間ができたら、まだ整理完了とは程遠い私の部屋をなんとか整理し直さないといけません。

BTW the bad thing for me is that, since I moved to a new apartment in May, I have never had a chance to listen to 78rpms - maybe because I haven't had enough time to fully enjoy listening to music, or maybe because this new place is too quiet all around (which is a very good thing for my sweet little baby, now in 9 months old) and I feel I hesitate to play vinyl/shellac records at louder volume as I used to do. But the most probable reason is, that I had been very busy and confused while moving/restoring whole lot of stuffs, and cardboard boxes which contains my 78rpm collection are out of reach behind my other stuffs (books, cloths, other boxes et al.) - so the first thing I have to do after I have spare time is to do another cleanup in my room . . .

This afternoon mother-in-law went long way back to Kobe. She stayed with us for about a month to help us with the baby. Thank you so much anyway.

The only regret with her was, for me, that she didn't like listening to music much, and that she didn't understand how much (and how often) I love listening to music as a daily basis. So while she was staying with us at home, the loud speaker on the right side had to stay away from the speaker-stand, because the speaker is always located in front of the window to the veranda, and she always complained that the speaker stood in her way out to the veranda with laundry . . . yes she's right.

My little baby, I know you still don't even understand what the hell the music is on this 78rpm right here by your side, but maybe someday you will surely come to know “the genius of modern music” . . . .

うちから自転車でたったの10分。こんな近くに、こんないい場所があったなんて。

Last night I picked up two LP albums by Max Roach and put 'em on my turntable to pray R.I.P.

昨晩はマックス・ローチへの追悼の意味で 2枚の LP を聴きました。

Both albums recorded in the 1970s, both released only in Japan, both not so popular as Roach's other masterpieces, and both not his best albums ever. But they have given me very interesting insights of the percussion artistry of how Max Roach can “sing” with the drums.

ともに 1970年代録音で、ともに日本のみのリリースだったものです。どちらの盤もマックス・ローチの幾多の名盤群に比べると有名な盤ではなく、最高傑作というわけでもありません。けれども私には、どちらのアルバムも初めて聴いた時から非常に興味深く感じられたものです。偉大なるパーカッショニスト、マックス・ローチのドラミングが文字通り「歌っている」、そのことがシンプルなフォーマットでここまで現れている盤は他にないようにすら思えます。

Part 1 (Bethlehem, Fantasy, Pacific Jazz)、 Part 2 (Roost, Atlantic, Blue Note)、 Part 3 (Riverside)、 Part 4 (Prestige) に続く第5回は、私の手持ちのカタログの中で 2番目に古いものです。 もちろん戦前、日本的にいうと昭和10年代 (笑) ですので、当時は SP 時代全盛期。私の様な SP 初心者のコレクションには、本カタログに掲載されているものはほとんど含まれていません (笑)

About an year ago, I found an interesting website entitled “The 78rpm Blog”, a blog by Björn Jakobsson-san from Stockholm, Sweden. His website deals with very interesting 78rpms, including some Swedish pressings, some U.S. pressings etc. - this website even has mp3s of such 78rpms so that we can give them a listen. Good job, Björn-san!

Since December 2005, his blog had not been updated for a while. But this month I found he finally restarted updating his website. One of the funniest 78rpms on his blog so far would be “Cellos Snarkologi” - I don't understand Swedish at all, but this 78rpm contains many variations (and commentaries) of snorings! What a record . . .

I have introduced various old record catalogues in my previous articles (see “Old Record Catalogues” articles, Part 1, 2, 3 and 4, although they are currently written only in Japanese), and some articles also featured qutations from disc reviews and ads on Down Beat magazine back issues which I have. Actually it's always fun and interesting to read from pages to pages, ads to ads, reviews to reviews - such magazines and newspapers of many many years ago still delivers atmosphere of that era, working like “time capsules” of when Jazz was one of the driving forces in the Popular music. Other than that, they are full of invaluable information which is very useful for discographic purpose.

最近ここに書いたエントリでは、古いレコードカタログを紹介してきました。それらのエントリ中で、ダウンビート 誌のバックナンバーからディスクレビューや広告などを引用することもありました。実際、こういう古い音楽雑誌を読むというのは、非常に面白く興味深いものがあります。全ての記事、広告、レビューなど、そのどれもが、あたかも タイムカプセル の様に、ポピュラー音楽においてジャズが重要な位置を占めていた昔の息吹を感じさせてくれます。そして、ディスコグラフィー的に非常に参考になる情報であふれています。

Part 1 (Bethlehem, Fantasy, Pacific Jazz)、 Part 2 (Roost, Atlantic, Blue Note)、 Part 3 (Riverside) に続く第4回は、1956年発行の、とある有名なジャズレーベルのカタログです。 今回は SP やシングル盤もばっちり掲載されている、いかにも過渡期らしいものです。

ABSTRACT: does anyone know what “Metrolite” (on MGM label), “Merco Plastic” (on Mercury label) or “SAV-O-FLEX” (on Savoy label) actually mean? What are these “non-breakable under normal use” 78rpms actually made of? Do you know other phrases for such non-breakable 78rpms on other labels? If you know such information, let me know.

ひとつ前のエントリへのコメント で話題になったもの。SP 末期の 1940年代末から1950年代前半にプレスされた盤でたまに見かけることのある、従来のシェラック盤よりは割れにくいとされる盤の表記についてです。

In some way, and for some people with huge love for records, it should be an ultimate choice -
which do you prefer, an LP with a cover, or 78rpms without a cover, if both have the same contents and if both were released in (roughly) similar period?

ある人種 (笑) にとっては、究極の選択かも知れません。
同一内容、ほぼ同時期のリリースのアルバムだとして、 ジャケット付の LP をとるか、 ジャケなしの SP をとるか。

Part 1 (Bethlehem, Fantasy, Pacific Jazz) に続きましては、今度は少しばかり古めの奴をいってみましょう。1941年〜1955年のカタログ 4種類です。

瀬谷さんはあっという間に分かってしまいましたが (笑) 78回転 の方でかかっていたのは、 ウィリー・ブライアント (Willie Bryant) の 「Mary Had A Little Lamb」 という曲でした。この演奏、この SP、歴史的名演でもメガレア盤でもないけれども、ホント大好きなんです。

bassclef さん のところの 「Jazz On The Bounce (bel canto)」 というエントリ。ここのコメントで、SP、10インチLP、12インチLP、シングル盤、EP などの価格についての話題がありました。

何年か前に、たまたま古いカタログパンフレット (いろんな時期のいろんなレーベルのミックス) をロットで買う機会がありまして、bassclef さんのところに書いたのも、それらを一部参考にしました。せっかくなので、なにかの参考になればと思い、何回かに分けて紹介してみようと思います。

これは 先日届いた14枚 の中の 1枚ではないのですが、先月か先々月に「ついでに」入手したものでした。しかしここまで素晴らしい内容だったとは嬉しい誤算です。

This 78rpm is not one of the fourteen 78rpms I got the other day - probably I bought this a month or two ago along with several other 78rpms I won. However, the music was unexpectedly wonderful to me - it's a lovely, welcome and fascinating misjudgement.

この前の日曜日までの二週間は、毎晩 全仏オープン のテレビ観戦に大忙し (おかげで贔屓にしている ラファは無事三連覇達成。めでたしめでたし)。次の ウィンブルドン が始まるまでの二週間、やっと音楽を聴く時間がとれそうです。

Until last Sunday for two weeks, I was very busy watching Roland Garros matches on TV every night - and one of my favourite players Rafael Nadal has won three straight crowns against the best tennis player in the history Roger Federer which was a great news for me. The next big tournament, The Championships (Wimbledon) will start on 25th of June, and until then I think I can have time to enjoy listening vinyls, CDs and 78rpms after many days of absence.

それにあわせるかの様に、海外から SP が到着。今回も一部を除いて 1枚あたり 5ドル程度で購入。玉石混合ですが、しばらくはいろいろ楽しめそうです。

And it's a good timing that I received a large parcel yesterday night, containing as many as fourteen 78rpms from the US. Each costed only five bucks with a few exceptions. They might be a mixture of the wheat and the chaff, but anyway I think I will enjoy listening to every 78rpm for a while.

あー だの こー だの そー だの、なんやかんやと忙しくしてて、最近はゆっくり音楽を聴く時間もとれません。とほほ。

Vine Linux development becoming very active and busy, enjoying small home vegetable farm at my apartment's verandah, watching professional tennis matches on TV, playing tennis with my friends . . . that's how I cannot have enough time to enjoy listening to vinyls and 78rpms in the living room nowadays . . .

最近になってやっと気付いたのですが、SP を聴く時にはスピーカのツィータ用アッティネータを絞ると、割合といい感じで再生できています。たまにはアッティネータも動かしてあげないといけませんしね。あ、もちろん、ヴィンテージのフルレンジなどにかなうはずもありませんけど、まぁ慎ましく平凡な生活を営む我が家ではこんなんでよしとするしかないでしょう (笑)

My recent discovery (small but innevitable) is, that decreasing high frequency output by adjusting an attenuator for a tweeter works very well when playing old 78rpms. Other than that, it may be better for the attenuator to get moved very often. Of course, I know vintage full-range speaker units/systems will sound far better, but it's my home system - money always talks anyhow :(

今年発売されたばかりの、この 2枚組 CD。なんといってもジャケットがイカしてます。 ボロボロになった SP アルバム を模した装丁で、最初に手にとった時には不良品かと勘違いしましたよ . . .

This double CD album, just released in this year, has very funny artwork here - take a look, it looks like a heavily worn-out 78rpm album binder! When I saw this artwork for the first time, I thought this copy is one of substandard products . . .

昨年 瀬谷さんのお宅に伺った 際に、瀬谷さんから頂いた SP 用輸送ケース。年に何度か郵送されてくるオークションサイトのカタログにステッカーが同梱されていましたので、このケースに貼ってみました。

Seya-san kindly gave his spare 78rpm carrying case to me for free when I visited Seya-san's house last year along with Okamura-san. Today I pasted a sticker onto the carrying case - the sticker was included in 78rpm auction catalogue book which was mailed to me regularly.

フランキー・レイン (Frankie Laine) さんが 6日、心不全の為 93歳で亡くなったそうです。大往生といっていいのかもしれません。

Mr. Frankie Laine died on 6th of February, of heart failure. He was 93 years old - I hope it was a natural and peaceful death.

ショパン (Frédéric François Chopin) のワルツ集 . . . 音楽に全く興味のない人でも、必ず何曲かは耳にしたことがあるはず。少しでもピアノを習ったことがある人なら、何曲かは弾いたことがあるはず。そして弾き手の解釈によってその表情が余りにも変化してしまう、本当に 難しい 曲集。

Piano Waltzes by Frédéric François Chopin . . . which have been very popular even among people who don't have interests in music at all . . . anyone who had learnt playing classical piano ever had a chance to play a Chopin Waltz or two . . . and what's most important, these fourteen Waltzes are very difficult to play - every pianist play Chopin Waltzes based on interpretations of their own, and every performance shows variety of diversity.

新年を迎えたというのに、ここの更新もままならず。本格復帰にはもう暫くかかりそうです。

相変わらず忙しさは続いていますが、息抜きを兼ねて昨日つくばの 瀬谷さん のお宅に遊びに行ってきました。美味しい料理とお酒を交わしつつ、 SP の奏でる素敵な音色に包まれて瀬谷さんと岡村さんと過ごす至高の7時間でした。

I've still been very busy these days, but I also need a refresh - yesterday I visited Seya-san, an awesome Jazz 78rpm collector, living in Tsukuba, Ibaraki. The living room was filled with warm and rich sounds by various 78rpms, and I really enjoyed music, delicious foods, sake, and chatting with Seya-san and Okamura-san - many thanks for the precious hours!

自らの不注意で SP盤を割ってしまい かなり凹んでおりますが、こちらは無事に残った1枚。同じ Savoy レーベルですが、 LP でもお馴染みの音符があしらわれたデザインのものです。 やはり 前回のレーベルデザイン の方が圧倒的にいいですね。

Just four hours after I published the previous article, the 78rpm was broken into pieces due to my carelessness - I was totally depressed. Anyway this is what could avoid the accident. It's also on Savoy label, but the label design is different. I prefer the early design rather than this simple “note logo” design (which is also familiar on LP issues).

本盤の内容に関わらず (もちろん内容も素晴らしいのですが)、このステキなレーベルデザインだけでグッときてしまいます。

今回は何も書きますまい。Thelonious Monk の初録音 (1941年の Minton's Playhouse ライブ録音を除く) となる 2枚の SP 盤のうち 1枚。やっと手に入れました。

Here is what I'd been looking for for a long time - Thelonious Monk's recording debut (except live session at the Minton's Playhouse in 1941). Four tracks were recorded on the session, and this 78rpm contains the two.

昨日、自宅にて某雑誌の取材を受けました。若いビジネスマン向け?の一般?雑誌で、音楽雑誌でもなく (そらそうだ) オーディオ雑誌でもなく (そらそうだ)。果たしてどんな切り口や視点 (あるいはバイアス) からの取材なのか、当初は一抹の不安もあったのですが、記事担当者が以前からの知合いの方だったこともあり、終わってみればとても楽しい二時間でした。そのあと編集者さん、カメラマンの方と 4人でいきつけの吉祥寺のお店になだれこんで宴会モード、特にカメラマンの方と音楽の話などで盛り上がり (というか酔いの回った私が一人でレコード話をぐだぐだと力説? . . . すんません)、気がつけば夜は更けておりました。

やや二日酔い気味の今日、そういえば昨日は SP かけなかったなぁと思い、最近届いたこの1枚を。珍しくカンパニースリーブも付属していました。ふむふむ、当時この 10インチ盤は 1ドルで売られていたんですね。

昨晩の宴会では、別にレコードジャンキーでもコレクターでもない皆さんに、へべれけになりながら SP がどんなにステキなメディアであるかを力説していたという . . . ああ思い出しただけでも恥ずかしい。

突然ですが、ミュージシャンで「Hank なにがし」といえば、誰の名前を思い付きますか?

私が最初に思い付いたのは . . .

やっとこさアンプが帰ってきました。結局直流点火回路のダイオードの不良ということだった様です。ダイオードとコンデンサを少しキャパの大きいものに交換して下さいました。また、300B のバイアス調整もし直してくれていました (つかせめてこれくらい自分でやれよ > 俺)。部品代はサービスして下さったので (感謝感謝) 工賃のみ支払い、車に積んで越谷からひとっ走り、えっちらおっちらと部屋に運び込み、早速接続を終えたところで、アンプ復帰後最初の一枚。 やはり この前 レーベルを載せた、あの盤です。

    

Un Poco Loco c/w It Could Hapen To You / Bud Powell
(Blue Note [US] 1577)

12インチ LP では 3テイクが冒頭に収録されているせいもあってか、リスナーとして征服すべき、こ難しい曲と思われることもあるようですが、このテーマ部のラテン風味なアレンジは理屈抜きでカッチョエーとしかいいようがないと思うねんけどなぁ。

盤質は最高とはいかないけど、SP 独特のサーフェスノイズと分離して、えげつない程圧倒的な 3人の演奏が襲いかかってきます。特に Roach のドラムスとカウベルの響きの鋭さといったら。サーフェスノイズに負けずに大音量で聴くのが正解。B面のソロは、全体の構成やタッチもさることながら、ペダルの妙技をじっくり味わうべきでしょう。

はぁ、ともあれ辛かった修行僧生活は終わり。えがったえがった。

アンプを修理に出して はや 6日。かなり辛くなってきました。

PC 上で CD を再生し、そこから流れてくる貧弱な音を聴きつつ、脳内補間修正して楽しむというのはかなり大変な労力を要します。とはいえ、イマジネーションや記憶力を駆使しないといけないので、これはこれで楽しいような気も。いや、楽しい様な気がするなんて思ってきてるのは末期症状なのかも。ヤヴァイ。

SP や LP のレーベルを眺めながら、PC に向かって貧弱な音を聴く。

早くこの悲惨な状況を脱したいものです。

There are so many masterpiece performances of Mainstream Swing Jazz left on legendary Keynote label. Some might love Lester Young Quartet's 1943 session too much; other recommendations might include Dinah Washington's debut recording with Lionel Hampton Sextet in 1943, Coleman Hawkins' quintet session featuring Teddy Wilson (1944), Kansas City Seven's swingy session featuring Lester Young (1944), Cozy Cole All-Stars' awesome recording featuring Earl Hines and Coleman Hawkins (1944), Lennie Tristano Trio's debut recording (1947), and many more . . . We must deeply thank to the producer Mr. Harry Lim, who recorded most of these legendary recordings.

極上の中間派ジャズがこれでもかという程大量に録音された、伝説の キーノート (Keynote) レーベル。 その中でも、レスター・ヤング (Lester Young) カルテットの 1943年録音を愛して止まないファンは多いでしょうし、他にもダイナ・ワシントン (Dinah Washington) の初録音 (1943)、コールマン・ホーキンス (Coleman Hawkins) クインテット (Teddy Wilson 入り) の劇的な名演 (1944)、カンザス・シティ・セブン (Kansas City Seven) のスウィンギーなセッション (1944)、コージー・コール・オールスターズ (Cozy Cole All-Stars) 名義の、アール・ハインズ (Earl Hines)、Coleman Hawkins などを含む完璧なセッション (1944)、レニー・トリスターノ (Lennie Tristano) の初録音 (1947) など、名演を挙げればきりがありません。ただただ、これらの伝説的セッションの大半を録音し後世に残してくれたプロデューサー、ハリー・リム (Harry Lim) 氏に感謝するのみです。

It was just a few years ago when I decided to listen to Django Reinhardt very seriously - of course I have heard of his music here and there since over a decade ago, but when I happened to obtain the below 3CD box, I was completely shocked by his complete artistry - since then, I have devotedly listened to ths box set dozen of times. And recently, a new desire come on my mind - I would like to listen to his music on 78rpms!

内外〜タイヘイ〜日本マーキュリー。SP 時代に名を残したこのレーベルの歴史が、1999年に神戸新聞上に掲載された (らしい) 特集記事でまとめられています。その他関西マイナーレーベルの興亡についてもよくまとめられているようです。

日本マーキュリーが東芝にスタッフ・専属歌手をごっそり引き抜かれたのが昭和33年 (1958年)、 日本ではまだまだ SP 盤が幅をきかせていた時代でしょうか。 果たして昭和33年以前に、日本マーキュリーは LP リリースをしていたのでしょうか。

えー、2004年11月に公開した 「Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”」 以来、Mercury Records Collection に載せた、大変久し振りとなるコラムです。 第2回となる今回は、何人かからのリクエストにお応えして、 EmArcy レーベルに関する四方山話としました。 かなり長くなりそうなので、2〜3回に分けて掲載する予定です。今回はその前編。 とりあえず日本語版だけの公開です。 こちら からどうぞ。

Well, it's been a very long time since I published the very first article back in Nov. 2004 (entitled Mysteries of “Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago”). I may be very sorry to the performers on this 78rpm, if they happen to know that I bought this disc by incident :) This is a very HOT swing combo performance headed by Teddy Wilson in 1937.

1953年設立の Bethlehem レーベルでも SP リリースがあったんですね。それだけで思わず買ってしまった一枚です。ま、どのレーベルも 1955年〜1956年くらいまではドーナツ盤と並行して SP リリースを続けていた様ですので、あって当然なのかもしれませんが。

Even the Bethlehem label (established in 1953) had 78rpm releases! I was delighted to find the copy and immediately bought it. Well, as a matter of fact, most labels released 78rpms (along with 45rpm singles) until 1955 or 1956, so it is very natural that Bethlehem released 78rpms in its early period.

少なからず SP が手元に集まってくると (とはいってもまだ 100枚もありませんが)、その収納に悩んできます。 なにせ LP とは違い、桁違いに 割れやすい ときてます (末期のヴィニール製 SP ですら!)。 実際、昨年一年間に海外から購入した SP のうち、郵送中に割れてしまった盤が既に 5〜6枚もあります (しくしく)。

現在は薄手の 10インチ LP 用紙スリーブに入れたのち、 ディスクユニオンの 10インチ LP 用箱 に収納しています。この箱自体は使い勝手が良いのですが、薄手のスリーブはどうにも不安が募ります。 なにより、SP 盤自体が非常に重い ものですので、出し入れをするだけでもスリーブがどんどん痛んでいきそうです。 もちろん、SP を割れから防ぐという意味でもほとんど役に立っていないでしょう。

そこで、SP コレクターの大先輩 瀬谷さん が勧めておられた SP 用スリーブ Disc-o-Files を近々買ってみようと考えています。 5.5インチスリーブから16インチスリーブまで、なんと11種類にも及ぶサイズの豊富なラインアップといい、みるからに丈夫そうな作りといい、非常に興味津々です。

10インチ SP 用スリーブは (さすがに大量に売れているのでしょう) 1枚たったの 35セント。 とりあえず 10インチ用 100枚と 12インチ用 6枚 (The Jazz Scene 用に) を買ってみようかしら。送料はそこそこかかってしまうでしょうが...

あっという間に2005年は過ぎ、2006年を迎えました。今年も宜しくお願いします。

昨年1年間は、コレクターとしてはあまり成果があった年とはいえませんでしたが、またまたいろんな音楽に出会うことができました。振り返って個人的ベスト 5 (プラス、番外編) を列挙してみましょう。

Speaking of myself, the year 2005 was not the best one as a collector, but there are several “great” acquisitions as well as finding a great music. Here is my own “best five” (plus an extra title) ...

「ディスコグラフィーを鵜呑みにするな」という名言があります。調査開始の礎として非常に有用ですが、最終的には真偽を自分の耳で確かめ、現物を探して確認するのが王道だということでしょう。 著名なディスコグラファー Michel Ruppli さんの手による5巻組 The Mercury Labels - A Discography の第5巻のシングルリリース一覧には、どの盤が SP で出たのかマークがついているのですが、これが全くアテになりません。事実、以下に紹介するこの盤も、SP で出たというマークは記されていませんでした。

There is an reasonable saying “Do not blindly swallow any info on the discography books”. Discographies are very useful and valuable when using as a starting point of a specific research, but after all we have to find actual vinyls and give it a real listening. For example, Volume 5 of The Mercury Labels - A Discography (by a famous discographer Michel Ruppli) has numerical listings of entire 78rpm/45rpm releases, with marked abbreviations which indicates “issued on 78rpm and on 45rpm”, “issued on 45rpm only” etc. However, these marks doesn't seem to be trustworthy: actually, this 78rpm (introduced here below) is NOT marked as “issued also on 78rpm”.

2005年 5月、 私が生まれて初めて自宅で SP 盤を再生した 時 (こちら も参照) に最初にターンテーブルに載せたのは Charlie Parker の “Visa c/w Passport” でしたが、ここで紹介するのはそれより若干遡って 最初に購入した SP です。 たまたま立ち寄った ディスクユニオン 新宿ソウル/ブルース館 で、SP 盤半額大放出をやっていた時に購入した 1枚です。

The very first 78rpm I played on my turntable (in May 2005) was Charlie Parker's “Visa c/w Passport”. On the other hand, this was the very first 78rpm I bought. I found this 78rpm at Disk Union Shinjuku Soul/Blues Shop I happened to drop by a while ago.

Abstract: On November 23th, I went to the Tsukuba city to take part in Jazz 78rpm Concert which was directed by Seya-san (a very famous 78rpm collector in Japan). I really enjoyed the performances of what the Jazz was like in the pre-War period, as well as rich and warm sounds of 78rpms in the era.

11月23日、外環道〜常磐道と飛ばしてつくば市へ向かい、 瀬谷さん が久々に開催された ジャズSPレコードを聴く会 に参加してきました。参加者は東京組8名とつくば組8名。岡村さんや柳沢さんといったおなじみの面々もいらしてました。

田舎のお蕎麦屋さんの店内に、瀬谷さんが出張演奏会の時に使われるジェンセンのフルレンジスピーカー、フィッシャーの真空管プリメインアンプがセットされ、食事を楽しみながら、大音量で 1920年代〜1940年代の Jazz を 18曲堪能しました。そら当然、うちで聴くよりもっと素晴らしいレコード演奏でした。本当に SP っていい音しますなぁ。個人的に興味を持った演奏もあったので、なんとかしてその SP を探し出してみたいものです。しかし 1936年録音の Bluebird レーベルだと。そんなもん簡単には手に入らないんやろうなぁ。

本来の目的は、ユニバーサルミュージックに貸し出していた LP などを返してもらう というもので、担当者 F さんからそれらのブツを預かった岡村さんが、「今度の瀬谷さんの SP コンサート行くけど、松林くんも来ない? その時にお返しするから」と言われたのが、今回つくばに初参加したきっかけでした。いや、しかし、実に楽しめました。

瀬谷さんが SP 蒐集を始められたのが、ちょうど私の今とほぼ同じ年齢だったとのこと。瀬谷さんの様な世界に冠たるコレクターにはなりたくてもなれませんが、まぁ今後もこつこつと音楽やレコードメディアとは付き合っていこうと思います。

苦節うん年。夢にまで見たアルバムをやっと入手しました。

のちに Birth of the Cool というタイトルで 10インチ/12インチ LP 化された、問答無用で歴史的名盤とされている Miles Davis Nonet の 1949-1950年録音。その録音時期からして、オリジナルイシューは 78回転 SP であろうことは想像に難くありません。

Miles Davis Nonet's 1949-1950 recordings (which later included on 10-inch/12-inch LP album entitled Birth of the Cool) have been sought as one of the historically important masterpices. By the way, as the recorded date may suggest, these materials were firstly made public on 78rpm issues.

今日は仕事で恵比寿へ。帰りに新宿で途中下車。 準備万端のプレーヤー のために、SP 用カートリッジを買って帰る。結局安い AT-MONO3/SP にした。

私が 2003年9月 より愛用している現在のターンテーブル J.A. Michell Gyrodec Mk. III (with plinth-based Papst AC motor driven by GyroPower QC)。このターンテーブル用の 78rpm プーリーがかつて存在していたという噂を耳にし、英国 J.A. Michell 本社に問い合わせをしましたが、「倉庫に残ってるかもしれん。気長に待っとくれ」という返事を最後に数ヶ月音沙汰なし。ダメもとでアメリカのショップに問い合わせをしたら、在庫ありとのことで早速注文。ものはついでと、予備のゴムベルトも同時発注。で、本日届きました。50Hz 用 33/45/78 回転用プーリーとゴムベルト。

写真の銀色のプーリーがそれ。3つ溝が切られていて、上から 33 1/3 回転、45回転、78回転用となっています。左にぽつんと置いてある黒い方は、直前まで使っていたプーリー。こちらは 2ベルト駆動対応版 (Mk.II あたりまでは純正で 2ベルト駆動だった名残りでしょうか) で、上から 45回転、33 1/3回転、33 1/3 回転、45回転と溝が切られています。

あとはカートリッジさえ買えば、うちでもめでたく SP 盤が再生可能になります。ここはいっちょ Ortofon CG65Di を、と言いたいところですが、クルマのメンテにお金がかかることを鑑み Audio Technica AT-MONO3/SP あたりが無難か。

1954年10月にリリースを開始した EmArcy レーベルでは、当初シングル盤 (45回転と 78回転) もリリースされていました。これらの中にはシングルオンリーでしか日の目をみなかった音源がいくつかあるのですが、これもその 1枚です (1954年 3月24日録音)。後に “The Complete Art Blakey on EmArcy” (日本フォノグラム 195J-10085) という LP に (同セッションの未発表曲 2曲と共に) 収録されました。A面の “In The Basement” は実にカッコいいハードバップです (パーソネルはレーベル写真を参照)。録音も実に素晴らしいガッツのあるものです。

EmArcy label, the most famous subsidiary of the Mercury label, was started in October 1954. In the very early era, EmArcy also had a number of 78rpm/45rpm single releases which faded out soon. Some of the releases contain invaluable tracks which can be heard only on these single releases. This Art Blakey's 45rpm (recorded on March 24, 1954) is one of such discs - both tracks can be heard on this 45rpm and equivalent 78rpm only (later Nippon Phonogram released the LP “The Complete Art Blakey on EmArcy”, 195J-10085, which contained these tracks as well as previously-unreleased tracks). The A-side track “In The Basement” is one of the finest hard-bop tracks (see the label photo for the personnel). Recording quality is also supreme - very powerful indeed.

しかし、この曲でかなりカッチョええテナーをブリブリとかましているミュージシャン、Henry Durant なる人については何も情報が分かりません。1954年〜1955年にごくわずかのレコーディングセッションに顔を出しただけで、その後表にはでてこられていない様です。

On these tracks, we can hear way-cool tenor saxophone player whose name is Henry Durant. Unfortunately there are few information on him available. As far as I know he appeared on a few recording sessions in circa 1954-1955.

この Henry Durant なるテナーサックスプレーヤーについて何か情報を御存じの方がおられましたら、是非御教授下さい。

先日，岡村融さんから電話が掛かってきました．

「...あのね，松林さんに質問があるんだけど」
「はぁ，岡村さんが御存じないことは私も知らないと思いますけど（笑）」
「あのね，日本マーキュリーから出た Roy Jackson っていう人なんだけどね...」
「む，もしかしてそれって，瀬谷さんから質問された奴ちゃいます?」

そう，元々私のところに 海外から舞い込んで来た質問．私は SP まで手を出してないし，ましてや日本マーキュリーの事は全く知らない．そこで瀬谷さんに質問をしておいたのでした．

私→瀬谷さん→岡村さん→私

という風に一周してしまって，結局未解決のまま（笑）

世間は狭いというかなんというか．

その後電話越しにレコードコレクターの大先輩と30分程雑談．いやはや，相変わらずこの方は凄いわ．

昨日 web で「１００年前の日本人の声録音、パリでロウ管１４本発見」という記事を目にし，素朴に「どんな声なんやろう」と 江戸東京博物館 に行ってきました．

記事では単に「東京都墨田区の江戸東京博物館でのイベントで公開される」としか書かれていなかったので，大勢の人がわらわらといる中で音声が公開されるだけなのかと思っていましたが，とんでもない．実に興味深いイベントでした．

会場で頂いた資料によると，そもそもが文部科学省科学研究費補助金・特定領域研究「江戸のモノづくり」計画研究 A04-21「蝋管等の古記録媒体の音声表現に関する非接触的手法の開発と活用に関する研究」の一環で，単に「昔の声が見付かったでー」というだけではなく，文化遺産としての録音及び記録メディアに対する三つの基本的な側面を網羅した研究集会というスタンスでした．

とはいえ，聴衆として非専門家 (=パンピー) も前提にしている為か，発表者の方々が専門用語 (という程のものではないのですが) を必死に平易な言い回しにしようとしてどもりまくっていたのには微笑んでしまいました．

私が参加した土曜日前半は，蝋管のレーザー非接触再生方式についての技術的概説のセッション，土曜日後半は昭和館，東京芸術大学，江戸東京博物館所蔵の目録の紹介及びアーカイブに関するセッション，残念ながら参加出来ない明日のセッションは，今回発見された 1900年〜1901年の日本語音声というコンテンツに関する紹介と分析．実にバランスのとれたプログラムとなっていました．

内容そのものへの興味，記録媒体への興味，保管整理する事への興味．レコードコレクターのはしくれとしても非常に参考になる事の多い一日となりました．参加出来ない明日の発表分も含めて全部のハンドアウトも頂けましたので，仔細を読むのが楽しみです．

明日のセッションでは，レコードコレクターズの名物連載でお馴染みの岡田則夫さんも壇上に立たれるらしく，参加出来ないのが本当に残念です．

瀬谷さん のところの 掲示板 に書かれた木下さんの post で知り，購入しました．

• The Cat on a Hot Thin Groove / Gene Deitch

Gene Deitch さん といえば，Tom & Jerry の第二期演出をはじめ，数々のアニメーション/絵本にその名を残すアニメ作家/絵本作家/脚本家として有名ですが，その Gene さんが若かりし頃，ジャズファンの一人として，コレクター向けの有名な雑誌 “The Record Changer” に描かれた挿絵を集大成したものです．

1945年12月号から1951年1月号までの (Gene さんが担当した) 表紙や挿絵，そしてひとつひとつのイラストに対して Gene さんの回想が添えられています．

そしてどの絵からも，レコードが好きな人なら思わずにやりとしてしまう様な仕掛けがあり，同時に Gene さんの音楽に対するふくよかな愛情 (とコレクターとしての屈曲した心理) が読み取れます． おまけとして，最後には CD 時代になってから描かれたイラストも．

かなり大判 (29cm x 37cm x 2.3cm) のハードカバーですが，この内容でこの価格はまさにお買い得です．瀬谷さんのサイトでも 紹介 されていますので興味のある方はどうぞ．
