Prevue / The Brooks Kerr – Paul Quinichette Quartet

(this entry was originally made public at my another web site on August 31, 2004).

Harry Lim was a famous producer of the Jazz division of legendary Keynote label which was very active in the 1940s. However, Keynote invested in a plant in California, but all the pressings were bad, then lost huge money on the plant. John Hammond finally sold to Mercury in 1948 to avoid bankruptcy (Hammond himself found his new position as a vice president of Mercury label).

Harry Lim already left Keynote label in 1947. Then in 1949 he reactivated Jazz recording on his own HL label and on revived Keynote label. However, the venture was short lived. Later on he spent busy years (from mid-1950s to early 1970s) at record resellers. Then finally in 1973, he returned to the record business full time with his own Famous Door label.

Among several titles on the Famous Door label, “Zoot At Ease / Zoot Sims” (Famous Door HL-2000) may be the most famous album among Jazz fans. Other titles include mainstream musicians like George Barnes, Mundell Lowe, Milt Hinton and Red Norvo, while young and talented artists like Scott Hamilton and Bill Watrous also recorded several albums.

(Famous Door HL-106)

This LP is also released from Famous Door label, performed by one of my favourites Paul Quinichette. Definitely his masterpiece performances include superb mainstream sessions left on EmArcy label in 1951-1953.

特に 1952年 1月30日録音の “I’ll Always Be In Love With You” (EmArcy MG-26022 “The Vice Pres” に収録) の歌心、リラクゼーション、優しい音色は絶品で、凡百の Lester Young フォロアー/イミテータとは一線を画す名演だと思います。

Especially on “I’ll Always Be In Love With You” (recorded on January 30, 1952, included on MG-26022 “The Vice Pres”), his musical artistry is superb with relaxation, heart-warming tone and melodious improvisations, which makes him unique and special among many Lester Young followers. Also, his last EmArcy album (produced by Quincy Jones) is, against less popularity, also a nice session. His yet another nice performance can be heard on “The Kid from Denver” album, another heart-warming session by big combo from Dawn label.

(Prestige PRLP-7158 “Cattin’ with Coltrane and Quinichette”)、本来の Quinichette さんの持ち味とはやや異なる前線に飛び出していったのち、フェードアウト。

Later he tried to go into a new scene – Hard Bop. He played with John Coltrane (on Prestige PRLP-7158 “Cattin’ with Coltrane and Quinichette”), but I don’t think it’s full of Paul Quinichette’s native artistry. Then he became inactive during the 1960s, and returned to the scene with “Modern Swing” performances which make his artistry so brightful.

Brooks Kerr – a co-leader of this album – is the youngest musician surrounded by elder three players. He once was a pupil of that formidable and exacting teacher, Willie “The Lion” Smith (actually his performance here is a reminiscent of “The Lion”). He is also as knowledgeable about the jazz past as the oldest. Probably Brooks Kerr asked Paul Quinichette to record this album with him.

Unfortunately, Quinichette in 1974 is not he used to be. He sometimes loses tone control on some phrases. However, he still plays marvellous and beautiful melodies which are as good as he played in his artistic peak. His performance is very distinctive – even when you listen to the album without knowing the members, you can surely find Quinichette’s tenor sound. The only regret is that the recording quality is not so good – was this album really recorded in 1974? Gene Ramey’s bass is sounding rather poor, and Sam Woodyard’s drumming is not sharp and crisp enough. Anyway, this album would be the best for Quinichette among his “return to the scene” years.

Talking about Brooks Kerr’s piano – in my humble opinion his piano sounds a bit lighter than other three. It may be probably because he is the youngest player, or because the recorded quality is not so good (as mentioned above). On the other hand, Paul Quinichette’s tenor sax is so bold (at the same time very warm and gentle).

175J-5/6 “The Complete Paul Quinichette On EmArcy” です。
