Various V.A. LPs, Pt.3 – Special College Jazz Album

Here is the third V.A. LP, from the Verve label (previous entries can be reached from here: Pt. 1 and Pt. 2). As far as I know, there is no “Sampler LPs” of Clef / Norgran / Verve labels (all supervised by Norman Granz) – but if you happen to know the existence of Clef / Norgran / Verve sampler LPs, please let me know. On the other hand, these labels had so many Various Artists LPs (or what is called “compilations”) in the catalogue. This LP is one of them, but there is an interesting fact…

Special College Jazz Album
(Verve MG V-8341)

興味深いことに、この LP は例のディスコグラフィー本 「The Clef/Verve Labels – A Discography」 では「not released」としてリストアップされています。

As you can see the above scanned images, there is no cardboard jacket – instead it comes only with paper sleeve. Furthermore, there is a note “Complimentary Record” printed on the sleeve. I don’t even know the detailed facts about the LP, but I guess this LP was freely distributed for college/university students, or for college Jazz bands. Interestingly, this LP is listed as “not listed” on the famous discography book “The Clef/Verve Labels – A Discography”.

[Verve MG V-8341 Side-A] [Verve MG V-8341 Side-B]

最も古い録音が Gillespie – Parker Quintet“Bloomdido” (1950年 6月 6日吹込)、最も新しいものが Jimmie Giuffre Trio“Time Enough” (1959年 8月 6日 or 7日吹込)。

Now the contents of the album (probably released in late 1959 or in early 1960) – it’s definitely a nice compilation of good swingy numbers on Mercury / Clef / Norgran / Verve era. The oldest recording is “Bloomdido” by the Gillespie – Parker Quintet (recorded on June 6, 1950), while the most recent recording is “Time Enough” by Jimmie Giuffre Trio (August 6 or 7, 1959). Most of the tracks are very swingy mainstream jam sessions (which Norman Granz probably liked the most) – the selection surely presents Granz’ favourites. Actually, Side-A starts with “Party Blues” by Ella Fitzgerald – Joe Williams – Count Basie (scat interexchanges are very impressive!), while Side-B starts with “Gene’s Solo Flight” by the Gene Krupa Quartet (Krupa’s awesome drum solo dominates the whole performance!).

Another interesting track would be B-3, “Turtle Neck” by the Oscar Peterson Trio (recorded on November 25, 1951). According to the discography, this performance became firstly public on this album! (or ARS G-415 “An Oscar For Peterson”, probably issued in 1957, from American Recording Society label would be the very frist release including “Turtle Neck”) Previously unreleased performance included on the complimentary record – Mr. Granz did such a chic trick!

The Complete Clef/Mercury Recordings Of Oscar Peterson Trio” (Mosaic MD7-241)

Addendum (Sep. 19, 2008) : Mosaic Records released a 7 CD limited edition box set entitledThe Complete Clef/Mercury Recordings Of Oscar Peterson Trio” (Mosaic MD7-241). And I found the following comments on its discography section :

(A) OSCAR PETERSON TRIO: Oscar Peterson (p, vcl), Barney Kessel (g), Ray Brown (b).
LA, November 25, 1951
631-4 Turtle Neck ARS G415
632-8 It’s Easy To Remember Clef 89113, MGC 695
633-6 Pooper -
634-6 Love For Sale Clef/Merc 8959, MGC 603
635-5 Until The Real Thing Comes Along (OP-vcl) - , MGC 127
Note: Some discographies list matrix 631 as being originally issued on Verve MGV 8341
College Album, however that LP was never released.

However, as you can see above, the album Verve MG V-8341 actually exists.

So I e-mailed a question to staffs at Mosaic Records (and Mr. Michael Cuscuna), and I got a reply from Scott Wenzel-san: “Thanks for the information – quite a rare LP and you’re right… the Ruppli discog lists this as never issued.
