Meditation / Toshiko Akiyoshi Quartet

Toshiko Akiyoshi (“穐吉 敏子” in Japanese) has been the most active and most influencial Jazz player in Japan, who led her own big band for thirty years (in Dec. 2003, the band played its final concert in New York). Since then, she has performed solo piano/quartet concerts (with his husband Lew Tabackin). As a Jazz lover, I cannot help admiring her continuous efforts and infinite artistry as a Jazz musician.

Her trio performance in the 1950s, her quartet activities (with her first husband Charlie Mariano) in the early 1960s, and her “Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band” (since 1982 she re-assembled her new band called “Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra featuring Lew Tabackin”) – they are famous and definitely her highlights. However on the other hand, in her “air pocket period” – just before she formed her big band – she left several albums by her quartet. This is one of them, recorded in 1971.

This is a very enjoyable and comfortable album. Especially on the title track B-3 “Meditation”, the performance is very relaxed and at the same time very emotional. Although the rhythm section sometimes goes out of rhythm (especially in the background of Akiyoshi-san’s solo space!), Akiyoshi-san and Tabackin-san plays so great throughout all five tracks (all are famous standard tunes) on the album. Especially, Tabackin-san’s emotional flute is awesome with fluent improvisations. His tenor sax (which is reminiscent of the Tenor giant Sonny Rollins) is also massive, strong and fluent (listen to the “big” tenor improvisations on B-2 “Straight No Chase”). His tenor and flute is like a spring which never be exhausted.

The only regret on this album would be the mixing – piano on the left channel, drums on the right, bass and tenor/flute on the centre, and Akiyoshi-san’s piano isn’t conspicuously featured (although she actually plays great backings and marvellous solos) – on the other hand Tabackin-san’s “big tone” sits very front. According to the liner-notes, four instruments were recorded monaurally on each channel of four-track master tapes, which was not the newest recording technique (at the time), and which was not ideal for stereophonic presense.

Well, this album was reissued in 1976 (when Akiyoshi=Tabackin big band was highly acclaimed), and the reissue LP is also innevitable – it contains complete versions (while on the other hand the first LP issue contained edited versions on some tracks), and “Straight No Chaser” is alternate version.

On the alternate take of “Straight No Chaser”, longer solo improvisations of Akiyoshi-san’s piano is fully featured. And what’s most important, this 2nd issue has far better sound quality (what a beautiful high-end frequencies!) with newly remixed stereo which is more natural – Akiyoshi-san’s piano on the left channel (same as 1st issue), Tabackin-san’s tenor/flute on the right, and bass/drums on the middle. The remix presents yet another artistry of the quartet with vivid contrast between the piano and the tenor/flute. So, as for this album, if you are interested in finding and buying this album, I strongly recommend you obtaining 2nd issue LP version.

For me, this album is the second best one I love (except her big band recordings). My most loving album will (probably) be featured on this site in the near future . . .
