The Duke Plays Ellington

Piano In The Foreground” (Columbia) だったり、 あるいは渋〜く The Pianist” (Fantasy) という人もいたり。

Which is your favourite album, when you want to fully appreciate the piano artistry of the great Duke Ellington? Some may say “Money Jungle” (United Artists) – others may include “Duke Ellington & John Coltrane” (Impulse!), “Piano In The Foreground” (Columbia), or even less-known “The Pianist” (Fantasy).

This One’s For Blanton!”

For me, “This One’s For Blanton!” (Pablo) has been such an album for a long time. On this great album (in his very last period), Ellington plays duo with Ray Brown, and presents so wonderful world, which cannot be done by anybody else. Also, this album fully features Ellington’s very percussive and powerful piano performances in very nice fidelity. I love this album so much. However, yet another album gradually replaces “This One’s For Blanton!” album in my mind as a “Holy Grail album for Ellington’s piano artistry”.

Duke Ellington’s Capitol era (1953-1955), when Johnny Hodges withdrawed from the Ellington band for several years, was rather underrated – some people like while others don’t. However, I really like Ellington’s Capitol era (as I like Columbia era). In April 1953, the first Capitol session was taken. Eight tunes out of this session soon became the 1st 10-inch LP “Premiered By Ellington” (Capitol H-440),, and some other tracks were released by 78rpms. Another session followed, being taken long after midnight on April 13-14 at Capitol’s Merlose Avenue Studio, Hollywood. Eight tunes were chosen to form the next 10-inch album “The Duke Plays Ellington” (Capitol H-477).

ライナーノーツには “ … without any sort of rehaearsal or plan. They just happened” とあります。

According to the liner-notes, this session was recorded “without any sort of rehearsal or plan. They just happend”. Duke Ellington, being backed by Wendell Marshall and Butch Ballard, played twelve tunes as time went by. All performances have fascinating charms – The Duke plays piano so tender and mellow (unlike he always plays so percussive and powerful) – which may be the reason some people says this album is modest. However, I really come to love this album more and more, every time I play this album. The only regret is the poor-sounding mix of this session – drums sound rather off-mike.

最近のリスナーには Norah Jones がセカンドアルバム Feels Like Home にて、歌詞をつけてカヴァーした “Don’t Miss You At All” の原曲、といえば通りがいいでしょうか。

A few years later, 10-inch LP H-477 was reissued as 12-inch T-477, which contains four extra tracks from the same session. The most important (and most famous) track among the four tracks would be “Melancholia”. The melody of this impressive ballad is so melancholic (as the title suggests) – Ellington plays so sincere on every tone, with his own timing, which is a reminiscent of Thelonious Monk’s solo piano. Very impressive performance indeed. By the way, young listeners may know this tune as “Don’t Miss You At All”, a cover version of “Melancholia” by Norah Jones, who added the lyrics by herself (this version is featured on Norah Jones’ 2nd album “Feels Like Home”).

A-5: Melancholia
A-6: All Too Soon

B-5: Retrospection
B-6: Dancers In Love

このうち 2曲はもともと “Dance To The Duke!”

By the way, these twelve tracks can be also heard on a CD reissue “Piano Reflections”, which also contains three extra tracks from December 3, 1953 session (Dave Black replaces Ballard, and add Ralph Colier on conga). Two out of these three extra tracks were originally released on “Dance To The Duke!” (Capitol T-637). This album, as the title may suggests, features very danceable big band sounds, and the last tracks on Side-A and Side-B are the trio (plus conga) performances, which are very percussive and rhythmic.

  4. Shaolin
