A few months ago when I posted an article regarding Earl Bostic, Seya-san commented that “That’s The Groovy Thing” was his favourite. Then I tried to find a copy for myself, and this is it (although I have this song on CD).

以前、ここに Earl Bostic に関するエントリ を書いたのですが、その際、瀬谷さんが「私のお気に入り」として挙げられていたものです。 その後しばらくしてやっと入手できたのでした (この曲は CD で持ってはいましたが)。

This is Earl Bostic‘s early hit single release on Gotham label. Side-A is a strong and jumpin’, stompin’ number with vocal refrain by Earl Bostic and other members, while Side-B is a superb instrumental R&B track in the middle tempo (being almost “Jazz” with enjoyable improvisations). Unfortunately, Side-A is well worn (although it looks better than it sounds), probably because its original owner played so many times on phonograph players? Hmmmm, this copy sounds inferior to CD reissue. However on the other hand, the flipside is so mintish and playing grade is superb. The performance is (of course) also superb, just like what the perfectly-controlled alto saxophone should sound like.

Earl Bostic の Gotham 時代のヒットシングル。A面は御大を含めたコーラス入りのジャンプ/ストンプっぽい元気なナンバーで、B面はアルトサックスの真髄を聴かせる、限りなく Jazz に近いミドルテンポのインスト R&B (アドリブも充分楽しめます)。残念ながら、肝心の A面「That’s The Groovy Thing」は、元オーナーによって蓄音機で聴かれまくったせいか、見た目よりも溝の摩耗が激しいようで、音は芳しくありません。これは CD で聴いてる方がいいよなぁ、という残念なコンディションでした。ところが B面は完全無傷で音質も最高。完璧にコントロールされたアルトサックスというのはかくあるべし、という珠玉の演奏が楽しめます。

The leader on this 78rpm is Pleasant “Cousin Joe” Joseph, a legendary New Orleans Blues singer/guitarist/pianist who is now much underrated and overlooked. Both sides are recorded in similar period as the above “That’s The Groovy Thing” session, and features Earl Bostic band’s massive performance. Here on the disc Cousin Joe is concentrating only on singing, being backed by the powerful band – notable nice tracks. By the way, it’s interesting to see the variety of musicians Cousin Joe ever played with – Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Clark Terry, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Al Casey and many more . . .

余りにも過小評価され見過ごされることの多い、ニューオーリンズのブルースシンガー/ギタリスト/ピアニスト Pleasant “Cousin Joe” Joseph 名義ではありますが、“That’s The Groovy Thing” とほぼ同時期のセッションからのもので、こちらも充実の演奏が楽しめます。Cousin Joe は本盤ではヴォーカルのみに徹し、バックの演奏と相まって迫力の Blues となっています。 ところで biography などをみてみると、この Cousin Joe が共演したミュージシャンが実にバラエティに富んでいて面白い。Sidney Bechet にはじまり Mezz Mezzrow, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Clark Terry, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Al Casey などなど。

For me, it’s very important and precious to listen to such an old recording before various musical tastes was being differentiated into every specialized categories (or “musical genres”). Such recordings have various aspects of fascination from various points of view. I really like to enjoy such perspectives and diversities of musical history all around the world – some relates to the others, some influenced to another, etc.

音楽ジャンルがどんどん専門化し細分化されていく以前の、こういうごった煮的魅力を発する音源に触れることは、 私にとって他に代え難い魅力があります。そうして世界中の様々な音楽の歴史と網の目の様な関係へと心は惹かれていきます。
