Fine And Dandy / Sonny Stitt

This short article is a revised edition of what I was writing bits and pieces earlier this year. Still one mystery survives – what and how will be the real truth coming out?

This 3CD box set, released in 2006, is a complete collection of Sonny Stitt’s first Prestige years (1949-1952), containing all available tracks (including alternate takes) in chronological order. This set thus doesn’t contain any tracks from his second Prestige years (1962-1973) which are very soulful and amazing to listen to too.

On many tracks on this box set, Stitt plays with the great tenor sax stylist Gene Ammons, including that “Blues Up And Down” (which turned a smash hit in early 1950s); others include his quartet sessions as a leader, scarce (?) sessions in which Stitt playing baritone saxophone, delightful septet sessions – showing wide variety (musically, technically and emotionally) of what the Modern Jazz had in the late 1940s through the early 1950s. Personnaly I would like to write here how I love Gene Ammons’ heavyweight, bold, warm, sometimes dirty, down-to-earth, and even lyrical and beautiful tenor sounds (grin) – his overflowing talent not being fitted into any conventional post-war Jazz categories I believe – but anyway this article is primarily for Sonny Stitt’s early recordings on Prestige label . . .

この時期の Sonny Stitt の録音の中で最も評価が高く、多くの人を唸らせてきた名演といえばやはり、当初は SP でリリースされ、まもなく “Sonny Stitt and Bud Powell” (Prestige PRLP-103 10-inch LP)、最終的に “Sonny Stitt with Bud Powell and J.J.

The highly claimed and most popular masterpiece session among these recordings would be the co-leader quartet sessions by Stitt and Bud Powell: these tracks were initially released as 78rpms, soon followed by “Sonny Stitt and Bud Powell” (Prestige PRLP-103 10-inch LP) and “Sonny Stitt with Bud Powell and J.J. Johnson” (Prestige PRLP-7024 12-inch LP).

Stupendous, gruesome and amazing improvisations by Powell at his best; well-constructed, elastic, vivrant and smoothful solo by Stitt; speedy and steady rhythm section by Curly Russell and Max Roach (I hear Russell=Roach section sometimes losts the right rhythm on certain tracks just for a few seconds, probably due to gigantic battles between Stitt and Powell, though). These eight tunes (ten takes total) by these four musicians – even on high-speed bop numbers or on emotionally beautiful ballad tunes – are one of the best example of how Jazz improvisations can produce beautiful melody reconstructions, and we might even say these are the great masterpiece, ranking with national treasures or even world heritages (grin) in artistic quality. Other tracks on the 12-inch LP album by Stitt and J.J. Johnson co-leaders also true masterpiece, but IMHO Stitt=Powell surpasses Stitt=Johnson emotionally.

There is a very interesting story on the booklet coming with the “Stitt’s Bits” 3CD box, which says:

. . . . He was one of the founders of bebop, yet during his lifetime and to some extent even now, he’s been dismissed as a technically skilled copier of Charlie Parker. I think his detractors are misreading his legacy. Stitt contributed a lot of his own ideas to the jazz vocabulary . . . .

. . . . At that time – the early Fourties – Stitt may have heard Charlie Parker, who’d recorded with Jay McShann’s band in 1941, although it has been written that Stitt claimed to have crafted an original style without having heard Parker. Miles Davis said that he heard Stitt with Bradshaw in 1942, and that Stitt had already developed his basic style. In any event, Stitt and Parker did meet and jammed together in 1943, and Stitt reported that the similarity of their styles amazed both . . . .
(quoted from the liner-notes by Harvey Pekar, Prestige PRCD3-30043-2)

Now I’m going back to the main topic of this humble article – the 24page booklet also contains a “discography” section, and the Jan. 26, 1950 session by Stitt=Powell quartet is written like this:

SONNY STITT QUARTET:
Sonny Stitt (ts), Bud Powell (p), Curly Russell (b), Max Roach (ds).

Well well, I see my copy of the 78rpm “Fine And Dandy c/w Bud’s Blues” (Prestige 9002) is not listed on this discography – by the way which take of “Fine And Dandy” is on my 78rpm?

Please note, following part of this article contains my guess (not only the definitive facts), so be careful not to swallow the rest of my article without thinking . . . .

Also note that this is like a sequel of an article I wrote while ago, which deals with New Jazz / Prestige 78rpm label design variations in chronological order (sorry, curently in Japanese only).

(Prestige 9002)

I listened to my copy of Prestige 9002, and confirmed, unexpectedly, that this 78rpm contained Take 2 of “Fine And Dandy” – note that the Take 1 is more thrilling one, where Powell starts his astounding solo while Stitt is still playing end (or the start of the 2nd chorus) of his solo. As you may recall, far above I quoted the discography from the liner-notes which says Prestige 706 contains Take 1.

These two titles are the only releases from the Prestige 9000 Series known to exist. And it is known that Prestige 9001 and Prestige 9002 are equivalent (or similar) releases to Prestige 705 and 706, respectively.

Which released first?

First question in my mind: which version was released first, Prestige 9001/9002 or Prestige 705/706?

    • New Jazz
      • Birdland 6001 ⇒ Prestige 708 (Stan Getz)
      • Birdland 6005 ⇒ Prestige 709 (Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt)
      • Birdland 6004 ⇒ Prestige 866 (Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis)
    • New Jazz 1401 (Stan Getz)

My guess is, Prestige 9001/9002 was the first releases. Here’s why I concludes so:

  • As I wrote in my previous article, Bob Weinstock started New Jazz label in 1949, followed by his next label Prestige in 1950.
    • New Jazz 78rpms used 800 Series for catalogue numbers (with one exception New Jazz 80-001). The releases lasted from 800 to 867 (many unreleased numbers in latter half)
    • Weinstock’s second label, Prestige 78rpms used 700/800/900 Series for catalogue numbers (300 Series for Dixieland sessions)
  • Other than New Jazz and Prestige, there were several “subsidiary” labels known to exist: Birdland label was one of them and used 6000 Series, from 6001 to 6005.
    • these five 78rpms were all recorded in early 1950 (January to March)
    • three out of five Birdland titles are available also from Prestige label
      • Birdland 6001 ⇒ Prestige 708 (Stan Getz)
      • Birdland 6005 ⇒ Prestige 709 (Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt)
      • Birdland 6004 ⇒ Prestige 866 (Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis)
  • There is (irregularly) New Jazz 1400 Series, only one release, known to exist.
    • New Jazz 1401 (Stan Getz)
    • a coupling of Apr. 1949 and Apr. 1950 recordings

  • [MY GUESS] It seems that all four-digit catalogue numbers (New Jazz / Prestige / Birdland) were released within a short period of sometime in 1950-1951 (maybe during the New Jazz ⇒ Prestige transition period?). So can we guess it’s natural that Prestige 9000 Series was out during the same period?
  • [MY GUESS] Soon after that, most of the releases were unified into three digit catalogue numbers? And most four-digit titles were reissued under three digit numbers using the same stampers?
    • Most of the early New Jazz / Prestige 78rpms have only “matrix numbers” etched on the dead wax; catalogue number information cannot be found on the dead wax.
  • There is yet another subsidiary with four-digit catalogue numbers, PAR Presentation 1300 Series (from 1301 to 1308, and 909), which consists of 1951-1953 recordings.
    • [MY GUESS] I think it’s natural that PAR Presentation Series was an ancestor to Prestige 900 R&B Series (different from regular Prestige 700/800/900 Series)?

Unfortunately, I don’t have enough magazines and catalogue booklets from 1949-1953 yet, to determine whether my guess is correct or not. So, again, please note it’s just my guess.

Which take is on Prestige 706?

Again, as I quoted from the liner-notes of the 3CD box set, Prestige 706 is said to contain the Take 1 of “Fine And Dandy” – then something came in my mind – is this really true? – is there any ways to confirm this with real copies of Prestige 706? So I started finding someone who own the copy.

Soon I found a person who posted the info and the scanned images of Prestige 706 to the “Discogs™” website, and I made an e-mail contact to him, Alan-san. Unfortunately, he said he didn’t have an environment for 78rpm playback. So I checked and compared very carefully between label scans (with dead-wax etched information) of his Prestige 706 and my copy of Prestige 9002. Thank you so much for your help, Alan-san!

My detailed inspection concluded that, both hand-written matrix numbers on dead wax and the length of dead wax itself looked the very same between both copies. So I concluded that Alan-san’s copy of Prestige 706 and my copy of Prestige 9002 both contains Take 2 of “Fine And Dandy”. If this was true, most of the past discography books would contain incorrect information for many years.

Interestingly enough, matrix inscription found on my copies of Prestige 9001/9002 can be read as follows (note that only the “Fine And Dandy” side does not have an alphabet suffix which indicates take numbers).

  • JRC-1000A (Prestige 9001 “All God’s Children” side)
  • JRC-1003A (Prestige 9001 “Sunset” side)
  • JRC-100-2B (Prestige 9002 “Bud’s Blues” side)
  • JRC-1007 (Prestige 9002 “Fine And Dandy” side)

However, as we see in many 78rpm releases in the past, it might be possible in may cases that one 78rpm contains Take A, while the other (with the same catalogue number) contains Take B. So we do NOT say here that there was no Prestige 9002 / 706 which contained Take 1 of “Fine And Dandy”.

I have to say here, that I am sorry to everyone reading this article, which is roughly written and is not well organized at all – sorry for that.

Call For Help

If you have your own copies of Prestige 9002 and/or Prestige 706, please let me know whether Take 1 or Take 2 of “Fine And Dandy” is on your 78rpm. I will appreciate your help – many many thanks in advance!

    http://www.sakura.cc.tsukuba.ac.jp/~jazzsp/lab/AtoZBri.htm
    New Jazz 800
