Universal Studio Blaze Burns Music History

Sad, traggic, depressing news for us old music enthusiasts…

“A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, June 1, 2008” (quoted from Reuters.com news article), and there is a new rumor (or confirmation) coming that the fire consumed invaluable/historical metal masters and master tapes back from 1930s-1950s.

At the Both Sides Now bulletin board listed above, Marty Wekser-san (a pretty famous mastering engineer who have worked on many reissue projects) mentions that all the Decca and Coral material, as well as a lot of tapes on ABC-Paramount, Dot, Chess, Kapp etc., were also destroyed.

For recorded materials by “big names” who made huge hits dozens of years ago and reissued many times as LP and CD, there is still a possibility that a copy of metal masters / master tapes still exists at record labels somewhere in the world – at least digitally remastered contents on CD actually exists now. However, how about invaluable rarities? Scarce and obscure recordings which was once released as 78rpm or 45rpm single then never reissued in any format? Never released materials in the vault? They are all “real treasures” for us music fans, but it seems they are all gone forever…

How many material, which material being lost forever? We still have to wait for further investigations and researches for that, but anyway it may be true that some portion of great musical history, one of big streams of American music industries back from Brunswick, American Decca to MCA and Universal, has gone forever…

    Richard (Dick) Sudhalter
