Pete ‘La Roca’ Sims is a drummer who played with such artists as Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard (all on Blue Note label), and who also left his leader album “Basra” (Blue Note BLP-4205/BST-84205, CD reissue). This LP, presented here, is the last leader album on Douglas label by the unique drum stylist with refreshing rhythmic/timing sense, just before he decided to leave music in 1968 (BTW he came back playing Jazz in 1979).

Anyway, this is an awesome and impressive album indeed – all compositions, most of which are poly-rhythmic under heavy influence of Afro-Cuban music, were written by La Roca himself. The pianist and the drummer definitely take the leadership of such complex but refreshing rhythms. Fascinating is the drumming of the leader Pete La Roca, which sounds so sharp and even beautiful, but the entire atmosphere of the cool, sharpened tensions owe much to Chick Corea‘s piano. Especially on A-2 “The Dancing Girl” and B-2 “Bliss”, Corea plays repetitions of short phrases, which even shows spine-chilling tension. After listening to these tracks, it becomes understandable why this album gradually gain praise and popularity, dozens of years after it was recorded. Also, the sheets of melodies by that John Gilmore surely shows fine chemistry with the rhythm section.

By the way, when I look at the dead wax area of this disc, I can easily find the Bell Sound stamp, as well as familiar A1 stamp and handwritten R. According to the liner-notes on the back cover, the recording was made at the Impact Sound Studios, NYC, but the dead-wax info shows that the mastering/lacquer-cutting was done at the Bell Sound Studio, and that the pressing was at RCA Victor Rockaway plant, New Jersey. Interestingly, the matrix number (U5RS-1663 on Side-A, U5RS-1664 on Side-B) even matches the RCA Victor matrix codes – it denotes that the master/stamper was made between January and June of 1967.

By the way, it’s wonderful that this album is now reissued both in LP and CD format (CD reissue) to meet growing demands.
