Miscellaneous: Japan Releases

Max Roach Original EmArcy Collection Series

Since 1983, many fine Japanese reissues as well as previously-unissued materials became public, as a fruitful result of Mr. Kiyoshi Koyama's devoted and detailed investigation of Mercury / EmArcy recordings. The first series was Clifford Brown's materials. Then other interesting LP issues and compilations followed.

This Max Roach series was released on September 21, 1984.

The List: Max Roach Original EmArcy Collection

-
Max Roach Plus Four
Nippon Phonogram 195J-38 (M)

Straight reissue of EmArcy MG-36098.

[195J-39]
Max Roach Plus Four & More
Nippon Phonogram 195J-39 (Side-A Mono, Side-B Stereo)

Japan-only compilation, featuring previously-unissued tracks.

Side-A's three tracks are outtakes from “Jazz In 3/4 Time” (EmArcy MG-36108 / SR-80002), while Side-B's four tracks are aouttakes from “Max Roach Plays Charlie Parker” (EmArcy MG-36127 / SR-80019).

These materials are also included on recent CD reissues ( Polygram 822 673-2 and Polygram 314 512 448 2 ) as bonus tracks, and also on a great comprehensive CD box “ The Complete Mercury Recordings of Max Roach” ( Mosaic MD7-201 ) by Mosaic Records.

-
Jazz In 3/4 Time
Nippon Phonogram 195J-40 (M)

Straight reissue of EmArcy MG-36108.

[195J-41]
Max Roach On The Chicago Scene
Nippon Phonogram 195J-41

Reissue of Mercury SR-60128.

Original issue of “On The Chicago Scene” was EmArcy MG-36132 (1958, monaural). According to various sources, 2nd issue of this album was said to be released as Mercury MG-20559 (monaural) / SR-60128 (stereo), but as far as I know the existence of these albums has not been confirmed. So stereo version of “Chicago Scene” LP is very important and this Japanese issue is one of the scarce occations to listen to the stereo version.

Furthermore, stereo versions of “Shirley”, “Memo To Maurice” and “My Old Flame” are completely different against monaural versions. “Stompin' At The Savoy”, whose last part is edited, has different ending between stereo and mono versions.

These stereo versions can also be heard on “ The Complete Mercury Recordings of Max Roach” ( Mosaic MD7-201 ) by Mosaic Records.

[195J-42]
Max Roach Plus Four At Newport
Nippon Phonogram 195J-42

Reissue of EmArcy SR-80010 with a bonus track.

This LP additionally features previously unreleased track “Deeds Not Words” from the same live performance.

The additional track can also be heard on “ The Complete Mercury Recordings of Max Roach” ( Mosaic MD7-201 ) by Mosaic Records.

-
Many Sides Of Max
Nippon Phonogram 195J-43

Straight reissue of Mercury SR-60911.
