Inside The Groove
A straightahead big band jazz album by Buddy Rich, compared with his other Mercury albums (one drum battle, one vocal).
Personal Impression (and brief notes)
A legendary drummer Buddy Rich left three albums on Mercury (except as a sideman on early Norman Granz-produced sessions). One is MG-20448 / SR-60133, which includes a battle of the drums against Max Roach. The other rare album, MG-20461 / SR-60144, featuring Buddy Rich's voice.
This album, his second LP on Mercury label, shows strictly straight-ahead powerful big band. All tunes are arranged by Ernie Wilkins. Although the members of the band are not permanent, picked available in New York by Buddy and Ernie, the result heard here is excellent. Especially on A-2 a great ensemble is rock solid, swinging and propulsive. Unique arrangement of A-5 is also inevitable.
Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)
7 out of 10
