MG-20448: Rich Versus Roach / Buddy Rich and Max Roach

Matrix Number : SIDE-A MG 20448A MS1    FF
SIDE-B MG 20448B MS1    FF

Comments

Equivalent release: Mercury SR-60133 (stereo).

with original Mercury inner sleeve.

Nov. 24, 2004: replaced with earlier pressing. My previous copy is very similar to the 1st pressing, but the label is slightly different. The matrix was MGT 20448A MS1 and MGT 20448B MS1. Compare the label design with the one far below.

[MG-20448]
Side-A label of MG-20448 (my previous copy)
It has MGT prefix on matrix imprints,
which suggests this platter was pressed at the plant other than Richmond.

Inside The Groove

A battle of the great drummers. Full of drums solo plays in all tunes.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

If we listen very closely to the artistries of the two great drummers - Buddy Rich and Max Roach, this LP is very interesting. However on the other hand, this LP lacks swingy arrangements as well as collective improvisations - it's very hard to listen to this LP through, if we treat the LP as ordinary Jazz album.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

5 out of 10

Personnel

Personnel/recorded date/master numbers confirmed with the Ruppli's discography.
(“The Mercury Labels - A Discography” by Ruppli and Novitsky, Greenwood Press, 1993)

Recent CD reissue (Mercury 826 987-2) has several alternate takes.
Furthermore, “The Complete Mercury Recordings of Max Roach” (Mosaic MD7-201) has one more alternate take.

UPDATE (Mar. 28, 2006):
According to John Carfizzi's information, B-2 “Big Foot” is a composite version of mainly the master take 3, while the entire drum exchange chorus section comes from alternate take 2. Also, the bass and drum intro at the very beginning was edited out.
A-1 “Sing, Sing, Sing” is an edited version of the master take 8 (the very last part of Max Roach's drum solo was edited shorter by a few notes).
B-3 “Limehouse Blues” is an edited version, with the piano intro and the opening ensemble chorus taken from a complete different unknown take (NOT the alternate take 3), then joins up with the master take 7 at the start of the first chorus by Buddy Rich's band.

Buddy Rich Quintet:
Phil Woods (as), Willie Dennis (tb), John Bunch (p), Phil Leshin (b), Buddy Rich (ds).

Max Roach Quintet:
Tommy Turrentine (tp), Julian Priester (tb), Stanley Turrentine (ts), Bobby Boswell (b), Max Roach (ds).

Arranged by Gigi Gryce.

Recorded at Fine Recording, New York City on April 7 and 8, 1959.

William T. (Bill) Stoddard, recording engineer.
