Inside The Groove

Bob James' first leader album, and a only date on Mercury label in his earliest era - lyrical, progressive and impressive acoustic trio.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Bob James, a famous and defined musician whose sphere of activities include popular, jazz, crossover, movie music and even baroque classical music, started his career with this jazz trio session. Although his current musical interests goes far from straightahead jazz, this album captures one of thrilling jazz date, along with another album recorded in 1965 on ESP label.

Some tunes sounds ordinally jazzy (with reminiscent of Bill Evans), but most of the tunes on this album are free and experimental. A-4 may be the most experimental performance (full of percussive sounds, as well as playing piano strings as percussions). B-4 also sounds very thrilling. A nice Jazz trio album.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

9 out of 10
