35000/JATP/MGC Series

[JATP Trumpeter Logo]

This series was started just after 10-inch LP's introduction. JATP (Jazz At The Philharmonic)-related live/studio recordings (by legendary producer Norman Granz) were released in this series.

Mercury in the late 1940s didn't have enough of their own Jazz recordings, so Norman Granz (head of the JATP, Inc) entered an agreement with Mercury to produce/distribute the JATP recordings in July 1948. In July 1953, when the agreement ran out, Granz continued releasing JATP materials on his own label Clef.

[Clef Sticker On Mercury]

Actually in the market we can find these Mercury albums BUT "Clef Records" stickers put on the front cover. Some copies have “Mercury” on the jacket but “Clef” on the label, while some others have “Clef” on the jacket but “Mercury” on the label. Such releases were the issues in the Mercury ⇒ Clef transition era.

Like other Mercury series, this JATP series has 5-digit release number - 35000 line. However shortly after its introduction, another numbering scheme (with Volume number itself) seems to be applied. As for MGC (Mercury “Clef” series) lineup, three different series were released (MGC-100s 10-inch, MGC-500s 10-inch and MGC-600s 12-inch). Some of them were also released in MG-35000 series in their introduction. MGC-1000s (12-inch) is the special series for Fred Astaire's December 1952's legendary session.

By the way, all these JATP concert recordings are now compiled and released as a LP Box or a CD Box , by Verve Records.
