Inside The Groove

A coupling of Jimmy Raney Quintet and George Wallington All-Stars, from original Swedish Metronome recordings.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Both sides contains leased materials from original Swedish Metronome label.

Side-A features Jimmy Raney Quintet. What makes these sessions so famous is, the appearance of Sonny Clark (on A-3 and A-4), who has been so much popular especially in Japan. Sonny Clark only has one chorus of solo on each tune, and the overall impression of these sessions are “moody, relaxed and smoothy chamber jazz music” (although A-3 is swingy up-tempo number).

On the other hand, Side-B features George Wallington's All Stars. His own piano as well as arrangements on the themes are unique. Both tracks are played in middle tempo, but each player's solo is nice and impressive.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

Side-A: 6 out of 10

Side-A: 7 out of 10
