Inside The Groove

A truly swingin' big band recording.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Woody Herman left gems of fine albums on Philips label. In this era, the 1960s, the Herman big-band commands many great musicians and arrangers, such as Bill Chase, Phil Wilson, or Nat Pierce.

Most of the tunes are in up-tempo swingy touch. Very catchy, but intelligently written melodies and scores. Very powerful, but very well organized arrangements. What a great, powerful and beautiful horn ensemble! Even such mellow tunes as A-4 or A-5 have well-controlled ups and downs. B-1 has thrilling tempo changes. Nothing but fascinating, wild and swingy.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

9 out of 10
