Inside The Groove
Georgie Auld's swingy quintet session, which reminds us of his original quintet back in early 1950s.
Personal Impression (and brief notes)
In the early 1950s (especially in 1951), Georgie Auld let a quintet consisting of Georgie Auld himself, plus Frank Rosolino, Lou Levy, Max Bennett and Tiny Kahn. This album, recorded in 1963, is like a reunion of his original quintet, with Leroy Vinnegar substituting for Bennett, and Mel Lewis for Tiny.
As the producer Jack Tracy says in the liner notes as “I can honestly say I have never enjoyed producing any recording date more than this one”. Also, according to the liner notes, the entire album was recorded in just over four hours. Probably all the members were very relaxed and enjoying the session.
Five talented players dig a well amount of solos. Tightened-up rhythm section, swingy improvisations by Georgie and Frank - all good stuffs.
Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)
8 out of 10
