Comments

Dec. 27, 2005: replaced with much cleaner copy (with same matrix information).

Inside The Groove

Helen Merrill's second LP on EmArcy label - this time “With Strings” arranged by Richard Hayman.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Helen Merrill's first EmArcy LP (MG-36006) is too famous - actually the masterpiece which is too good to be true. However, other EmArcy LPs by her are also innevitable.

On this second LP, she is accompanied with quartet, as well as moody strings arrangements by Richard Hayman (a hard-working arranger, conductor, and A&R man, as Hal Mooney, David Carroll and Quincy Jones also were).

This is so exceptional that such mellow strings backgrounds does NOT spoil her jazzy feelings. This is still one of the greatest female jazz vocal album ever.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

10 out of 10
