Comments

This title was originally intended for release as EmArcy MG-36159. However, it was cancelled for a certain reason, and re-assigned as Mercury MG-20453.

Inside The Groove

Gerry Mulligan's last leader album on EmArcy/Mercury label - one of his EmArcy/Mercury trilogy.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Gerry Mulligan, who was definitely one of the most important key players in the late 1940s-1960s jazz scene, moved to EmArcy label in 1955. Gerry Mulligan's sextet recorded a number of tunes during September 1955 - September 1956. Some of them are included on this album, EmArcy MG-36056 and EmArcy MG-36101. Later in the 1980s, Nippon Phonogram released four LPs (195J-33 thru 195J-36) which includes all materials from the sessions.

Anyway, this album itself. Like heard on other two LPs, they are an amazing ensemble, with no piano accompanied, magically intercorporates each other. Very swingy but full of “modern” taste. Yes, a Mulligan's sound. A nice album.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

9 out of 10
