Mercury 40th Anniversary V.S.O.P. Album (日本フォノグラム 25PJ-58/61)
1984年,Mercury レーベルの40周年を記念して,
児山紀芳氏の手による発掘音源を 4枚組LP に編纂したこのボックスが
発売されました.Mercury,EmArcy,Limelight に残された Jazz の録音の
未発表曲,未発表テイクを 47曲収録したこのボックスには,
詳細なデータが記載され,当時のアーティストの未発表写真が掲載された
ライナーノーツが付属しています.なかでも Leonard Feather 氏による前書きと
Dan Morgenstern 氏の解説が秀逸です.
このボックスには,未発表に終わったのが信じられない程のクオリティの高い演奏が
数多く収録されています.
Erroll Garner の Mercury に於ける第 1回セッション
(1945年12月 5日) の未発表曲に始まり,Gene Ammons, Jay McShann,
Arnett Cobb, Clark Terry など SP から LP への移行期の貴重な音源,
EmArcy レーベルに名盤を数多く残した Dinah Washington や Paul Quinichette,
Paul Bley, Clifford Brown, Herb Geller, Maynard Ferguson, Jimmy Cleveland,
Cannonball Adderley などの音源,そして Mercury への Quincy Jones,
Roland Kirk, Billy Taylor, Art Farmer - Benny Golson Jazztet,
Bob James の著名なアルバムの未発表音源と続き,
最後は Limelight レーベルの「Charlie Parker Memorial Album」に収録された
ライブ音源の Dizzie Gillespie の未発表演奏で締め括られています.
また,現在では CD ボックス
「Complete EmArcy Recordings」
等に収録されていますが,この V.S.O.P. アルバムにはボーナス EP として
当時世界初公開だった Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet の
Mildama (Take 2 と Take 4) (1954年 8月 6日録音) が付属していました.
