LS-86001: 'S Make It / Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers
CommentsEquivalent release: Limelight LM-82001 (mono). original gatefold cover with original booklet. promotional copy (for broadcast) Inside The GrooveJazz Messenger's first title on Limelight label. Personal Impression (and brief notes)This lineup was formed just after Wayne Shorter's quit. We can also see these members on “Jazz 625” video, recorded/filmed in March 7, 1965, London. Interestingly though, the Messengers with these members recorded (except above film) only one album - “'S Make It”. The loss of Wayne Shorter, musical director and great tenor player, had changed the way Jazz Messengers dig. Here, we can hear Mr. Blakey's drums which sounds not unlike Blakey's. But the nice and inevitable exception is A-2: his tam/brush works, his own triple-time approach, sound like nobody else does. It's great as always. The core member who contributed this album is Lee Morgan. His clear, brilliant tone is great among all tunes. Curtis Fuller also digs fine. The piano player John Hicks sounds like “little Bobby Timmons with a intelligent flavour”, and his compositions are also fine. John Gilmore, maybe famous on his co-leader album (with Clif Jordan) “Blowing In From Chicago” (Blue Note 1549), plays rather dull here. This album shows, unfortunately, that Messengers is leaving their highest peak. Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)7 out of 10 Track Listing
