Inside The Groove

Julian “Cannonball” Adderley's first leader album on EmArcy.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Julian “Cannonball” Adderley's EmArcy/Mercury era has been much underrated for a long time.

It may be true his Riverside or Capitol era (as well as his earliest Savoy sessions) captures the cream of his essence, much better on the avarage; on the other hand EmArcy staffs might have some difficulties and perplexity of how they could treat Cannonball and how they could arrange him to record the waxes.

On this album (Cannonball's first LP on EmArcy label), he is backed up with swingy big combo well arranged by Quincy Jones, but luckily a huge amount solo space for Cannonball (and other pals) are preserved. So we can enjoy well-arranged scores in the theme parts as well as swingy improvised solos.

Although this may not be highly-ranked hard-bop album, this is definitely the important album that we can find a lot of fascination in Cannonball's early era.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

8 out of 10
