Inside The Groove
A collection of Lester Young's 1949-1951 78rpm cuts.
Personal Impression (and brief notes)
As many may agree, The Pres' artistic peak was in his late 1930s thru early 1940s - before he went to join the army. After leaving the army he never approached the artistry of his pre-army playing.
But this will not immediately mean all of his post-army sessions are junk. Although the 15 months in the army had depressed his mental state, at least his late-1940s sessions represents another fine results.
This album, a compilation of four 78rpm single cuts thru 1949-1951 (except A-1: alternative take against original 78rpm 1st issue), proves one of The Pres' finest example of his post-army era. The famous 1946 “Lester Young Trio” with Nat King Cole would rank higher, but this sessions also shows his attractive tenors.
Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)
9 out of 10
