Inside The Groove

The Jazztet's 1st album on Mercury.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

The Jazztet, one of the underrated combo in that era (they were critically acclaimed, but didn't achieve the popular breakthrough), left two fine LPs in their Mercury era, just before their break-up.

Curtis Fuller's successor, Grachan Moncur III was definitely the key player in the Jazztet as well as great “Golson Harmonies”. Grachan's play sounds less evolutional or “a newer thing” than as heard in the following album MG-20737 / SR-60737 “Another Git Together”, but this first LP is also fantastic. A-1 is a top-notch tune with well-arranged ensemble and harmonies.

By the way, there are shortend alternate takes of A-1 and B-4 (not edited versions): they are included in the Mercury 40th Anniversary V.S.O.P. Album and CD reissue (Verve 314 558 052-2).

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

9 out of 10
