small stamp on back cover.

Later reissued as Mercury MG-20553 (mono) and Mercury SR-60121 (stereo).

Inside The Groove

Jimmy Cleveland's 2nd leader album on the EmArcy label.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Preceded by the success of his first leader album on EmArcy MG-36066, he left his own second leader album here. Although famous players like Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Wynton Kelly and Charlie Persip were gathered, the arrangements sounds rather logical and might spoil the natural charms of their plays.

Actually all members play great and all tune is rather nice. But at the same time, this LP ironically proves that the greatness of his first album MG-36066 owe much to the great arrangements by Quincy Jones :)

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

7 out of 10

Personnel

Personnel/recorded date/master numbers confirmed with the Ruppli's discography.
(“The Mercury Labels - A Discography” by Ruppli and Novitsky, Greenwood Press, 1993)

According to the liner-notes on the back cover, Jay McAllister played on A-2 (Dec. 12), A-3, B-2 and B-3 (Dec. 13). But I guess it's more probable that Don Butterfield played on Dec. 12, while Jay McAllister on Dec. 13, as on the Ruppli book.

A-1, A-2, B-4,:
Art Farmer (tp), Jimmy Cleveland (tb), Don Butterfield (tuba), Benny Golson (ts),
Wynton Kelly (p), Eddie Jones (b), Charles Persip (ds).
Recorded at Fine Recording, New York City on December 12, 1957.

A-3, B-1, B-2, B-3:
same personnel as A-1, except Jay McAllister (tuba) replaces Don Butterfield.
Recorded at Fine Recording, New York City on December 13, 1957.
