Inside The Groove

Maynard Ferguson's last LP on EmArcy/Mercury - swingy but well organized ensemble as always.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

Maynard Ferguson, one of the best-known band leaders and trumpetter, left several album on EmArcy. This is one of them,

This album is maybe one of the best example of “West-Coast” style Modern Jazz ensemble. Some may say West-Coast style is shit and the true aspcet of Modern Jazz only exists in East-Coast hard-bop by black musicians. But please wait, although in a well-arranged swingy ensemble, it's actually a one aspect of Jazz. You like it, you don't like it, it's up to you, but it's not so bad as such guys says...

Anyway, this group plays so well. It's a kind of typical “West-Coast” style well-arranged ensemble. You may notice such members' name as Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Larry Banker on drums, and Bobby Timmons on the piano (unfortunately only a short solo can be heard on A-3 and B-3).

His previous titles may present better of his early days.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

7 out of 10
