- 1966-1968: Toshiba Musical Industries era (1):
- Toshiba started to release Blue Note LPs in 1966. However, they were not Japan pressings; U.S. pressings were imported and sold with OBIs (or stickers) along with inserts written in Japanese.
- 1968-1977: Toshiba Musical Industries era (2) – Toshiba EMI era (1):
- It was in 1968 when Toshiba finally started to release own Japan pressings.
- 1977-1983: King era:
- In 1977 distribution rights moved from Toshiba to King. King Records released a number of great pressings.
- 1983-1988: Toshiba EMI era (2):
- Toshiba regained the distrubution rights in 1983, and started releasing comprehensive numbers of Blue Note LPs.
- 1989-now: Toshiba EMI (3) / EMI Music Japan / Universal Music Japan era
- We must thank to Toshiba – they continued to release Japanese LP pressings again and again, even CDs eliminated lovable LPs.
In the summer or fall of 1983, the distribution rights once again moved from King to Toshiba EMI.

Dec. 21, 1983 “Modern Piano Collection” Series, by Toshiba EMI
This series is interesting – first three titles (Wynton Kelly, Kenny Drew and George Wallington) are great compilations including previously-unreleased takes. They are such compilations as “Complete {Wynton Kelly, Kenny Drew, George Wallington} Leader Sessions on Blue Note”. Other seven titles are straight re-issues from Blue Note 4000 series.

1983? 1984? Jimmy Smith album, Limited Edition, by Toshiba EMI
BNJ-50101 was released by Toshiba EMI, probably in the late 1983 or early 1984. According to the OBI description, this LP was released to celebrate Jimmy Smith’s tour visit to Japan at the time.
The LP’s contents are very impressive like other unreleased materials: unreleased tracks from legendary Aug. 25 1957 session (same session as “House Party” and “The Sermon” albums); a quartet session with Stanley Turrentine; and a scarce session with Grant Green.

1984 DAM Super Analogue Disc 45, distributed to DAM members only, by Daiichi Denki & Toshiba EMI
Daiichi Katei Denki Inc., well-known home electronics reseller in Japan, once had a record club named DAM (= Daiichi-kateidenki Audio Members’ Club) in 1970s and 1980s. It was a club for Japanese audiophiles and audio fans.
DAM also released nearly two hundreds of “NOT FOR SALE” audiophile albums for distributing to DAM members. Some of them include direct-cutting 45rpm LPs of live recordings, audiophile pressings of famous tracks, etc., etc., from Japanese popular songs, Japanese oriental performances, crossover fusion jazz to straightahead jazz.
I have some of them: DOR-0028 (45rpm direct cutting LP – Side-A “Suite by Kyushu Folk Songs” performed with Japanese instruments such as Shakuhachi and Koto, and Side-B of three tracks by Takeshi Yamamoto and Isao Suzuki from legendary Japanese Jazz label Three Blind Mice); DOR-0030 (45rpm LP – live performance by Toshiyuki Miyama & his New Herd – a nice jazz big band session); DOR-0136 (45rpm LP – Toshiyuki Honda’s jazz/crossover tracks featuring Chick Corea on piano).
And DOR-0129, probably released in middle 1984, is a remarkable 12-inch 45rpm LP, featuring “Autumn Leaves” (from BST-81595) on Side-A; “Maiden Voyage” and “The Eye Of The Hurricane” (from BST-84195) on Side-B. This audiophile LP is made of flat thick vinyl, and the attached liner-notes are very detailed including engineering data. According to the liner-notes, this platter was cut at Toshiba EMI cutting room on April 19, 1984; the instruments used was Studer A-80 Mk.II (tape recorder), Neumann SAL-74 (amplifier), Neumann VMS-80 (cutting lathe), and Neumann SX-74 (cutting head). Cutting engineer was S. Takeuchi, and Sound engineer was Y. Watanabe.
This 45rpm audiophile pressing sounds very nice – worth looking for and listening to.

May. 22, 1985 “Blue Note 4000 Series Original Collection 100” Part 2, by Toshiba EMI
Part 2 has 9 titles in all. Initial pressings came with coated jacket cover.
Since it was a “LP to CD” transition period (and Toshiba EMI began releasing numerous Blue Note titles in CD format), these “4000 Series Original Collection” did not seem to sell well. This is why these LPs are very hard to find nowadays.
