自らの不注意で SP盤を割ってしまい かなり凹んでおりますが、こちらは無事に残った1枚。同じ Savoy レーベルですが、 LP でもお馴染みの音符があしらわれたデザインのものです。 やはり 前回のレーベルデザイン の方が圧倒的にいいですね。

Just four hours after I published the previous article, the 78rpm was broken into pieces due to my carelessness – I was totally depressed. Anyway this is what could avoid the accident. It’s also on Savoy label, but the label design is different. I prefer the early design rather than this simple “note logo” design (which is also familiar on LP issues).

Dootone レーベルに唯一のリーダー録音を残して 1958年に 29歳という若さで夭折したピアニスト、Carl Perkins。1950年代の西海岸シーンで頭角を現わし、Curtis Counce のグループで活躍した他、Brown=Roach Quintet の GNP ライブや、Art Pepper の Omegatape 録音も忘れられません。

Carl Perkins passed away in 1958 at the age of only 29, who left only one leader LP album on Dootone label. His exceptional and original pianism played a certain amount of role in the 1950s West-Coast Jazz scene, including Curtis Counce group, early Brown=Roach Quintet (GNP live performance), and Art Pepper on Omegatape reel.

その彼が初リーダー録音を行ったのは予想外に早く 1949年11月のこと。2セッションで合計13曲が録音され、そのうち 6曲が 3枚の SP としてリリースされましたが、現在に至るまで LP/CD 化されていない様です (もしされていたら御教授下さい)。 ペダルを駆使したアルペジョでバラードを美しく弾いているこの 2曲、後年のセンス溢れるバップピアノを想像すると肩透かしをくらう演奏かもしれません。

Interestingly, Carl Perkins made his recording debut as early as in November 1949. Thirteen tracks were recorded on two sessions, and six tracks were released on three 78rpms, and as far as I know these are not reissued on LP and CD (if there are any, please let me know). The piano style is different from what he will play years later – on this 78rpm, Carl Perkins plays ballad sides full of arpeggio and sustain pedal.
