Keys West / Claude Williamson

Finally found the LP which Mr. Chikuzen Satoh sincerely paid homage to (by imitating the jacket cover artwork). If you don’t the Chikuzen Satoh’s version, you can find the CD Chikuzen Presents Cornerstones at Amazon Japan website:

This 12-inch LP is one of the “Kenton Presents” series.

It is shameful for me that I didn’t know this LP except his another 10-inch LP “Kenton Presents Claude Williamson”. On this album, Claude Williamson plays solo piano/celeste on two tracks, while all the other tracks are refreshing bop music in piano trio format, which strongly convinces us of his nickname – “a whity Bud Powell”. Later in the 1970s, Mr. Claude Willamson recreated his originality, beyond typical Bud Powell-ish style. Anyway on this album, his refreshing bop piano reminds us of many fine early bop pianists.

Unfortunately, this copy I bought the other day is not in perfect mint condition – the jacket covers shows moderate wear, and the platter has several surface scratches. But it was rather cheap than I had expected. Side-B’s scratches produces several ticks and pops, but not disturbing the whole music. It can be very listenable when I play this platter with a monaural cartridge.
