MG-36098: Max Roach Plus Four
Comments
Equivalent release: EmArcy SR-80001 (stereo), which was actually UNRELEASED. Inside The GrooveMax Roach Plus Four's first album, featuring Kenny Dorham and Sonny Rollins. Personal Impression (and brief notes)Two talented players of Brown=Roach Quintet, Clifford Brown and Richie Powell, passed away because of a tragic automobile accident in the summer of 1956. After the initial shock had worn off, Max Roach started to continue his musical activity - finding musicans who would tally with his conception. Then the new-comers turned out to be Kenny Dorham on trumpet and Ray Bryant on piano. As all of the recorded materials strongly proves, there is no other Clifford Brown. No trumpet player can play like Brownie. But on this album, Kenny Dorham plays fairly good which surely satisfied the need and the tastes of Max Roach. Ray Bryant here, also presents another modern concepts on piano. Maybe we should not compare this Plus Four album with those by the Brown=Roach Quintet. All legendary recordings by the Brown=Roach Quintet are definitely top-notch and masterpiece. Otherwise, this new quintet named Max Roach Plus Four plays pretty well on this album, with refreshing bop jazz. Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)9 out of 10 Track Listing
