SR-60911: The Many Sides Of Max / The Max Roach Quintet
CommentsOriginally intended as Mercury MG-20457 (mono) / SR-60140 (stereo) entitled “A Little Sweet”, but unreleased for over five years. Equivalent release: Mercury MG-20911 (mono), promotional copy (for broadcast) with gold Mercury label. with original Mercury inner sleeve. Inside The GrooveRefreshing and boppish nice sessions by The Max Roach Plus Four, featuring Booker Little. Personal Impression (and brief notes)This 1959 session by Max Roach Plus Four was their second studio session featuring the legendary trumpeter Booker Little (BTW their first LP was EmArcy MG-36132). Also, they have another live LP EmArcy MG-36140 (mono) / SR-80010 (stereo). This session was originally intended as Mercury MG-20457 (mono) / SR-60140 (stereo), but unreleased by an unknown reason. Then in 1964, all the tracks made public on this album. Again, Booker Little's brilliant trumpet proves the entire session was a great one. B-1 “Tympanalli”, with an overdubbed tympani performance (by Max Roach himself) also sounds very interesting. Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)9 out of 10 Track Listing
Personnel
Personnel/recorded date/master numbers confirmed with the Ruppli's discography.
Although the Ruppli's book denotes this session was at the Mercury Sound Studio, NYC on Sep. 22, 1959, Mosaic's most recent 7CD box (MD7-201) says it was at the Fine Recording Studio, NYC on Jan. 22, 1959.
