Inside The Groove

The Max Roach Four (pianoless quartet) plays Charlie Parker compositions.

Personal Impression (and brief notes)

This album consists of two different sessions. The former session (Dec. 23, 1957) was produced by Bob Shad, and featuring Hank Mobley on tenor sax. On the latter session (April 11, 1958), Jack Tracy replaces Bob Shad, and George Coleman is the tenor saxophone player. On both sessions, unique quartet (without piano) sounds so distinctive, although Max Roach was in the middle of inventing his new sound. Front players, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley and George Coleman, may be at disadvantages after legendary Brown=Roach quintet, but Max himself plays great amount of nice drummings as always.

Strictly Personal Rating (to what extent I could enjoy this album)

7 out of 10
