Edison Replica SP

I’ve still been very busy, unfortunately, and I can’t have enough spare time to devote listening to vinyls and 78rpms – oh my. Anyway this time, here is a story of another 78rpm cartridge I bought several days ago . . .

[Edison Replica SP]

I always use AT-MONO3/SP (by Audio-Technica) for 78rpm playback. It’s very cheap, and the sound is very reasonable and fine (furthermore, the stylus is 3mil, unlike 2.5mil). However, after I bought the cartridge, I have played so many 78rpms so far, and it seems the stylus is getting worn-out. Maybe it’s time for getting another cart. Before I order another AT-MONO3/SP, I surfed the web and found handmade cartridges for 78rpms by a company named Oto-no-Edison (located in Fukuoka, Japan), then I decided to buy the cheapest one Replica SP.

Actually this Replica SP sounds much better than AT-MONO3/SP – very bold and powerful sound with lovable midrange, which reminds us of Ortofon mono carts. I really think I would like to try microgroove version of Edison Replica (for monaural LPs) – I hope I will some time. By the way, the stylus on this cartridge is 4mil (which is scarce these days – usually 2.5mil or 3mil styli is used for 78rpm carts nowadays). It plays very nice with few surface noise on some 78rpms, while it plays very noisy (or it even shows difficulty on tracing grooves) on some 78rpms, especially on modern 78rpms made in 1950s. So I will have to buy another AT-MONO3/SP and use both carts (Replica SP 4mil and AT-MONO3/SP 3mil) properly for each 78rpm. If there was a 3mil version of Replica SP, I would gladly buy it – how about that, Oto-no-Edision-san? 🙂
