ワールドカップの TV 観戦に夢中になっている皆さんいかがお過ごしでしょうか。つい先日まで全仏オープンの TV 観戦に大忙しだった私は、今年のウィンブルドンがどうなるかで頭がいっぱいなのですが (笑)

Well, I just came across this double LP album in last month (when the album was just released). Firstly I thought it was good but not superb. However, everytime I play this album, I just come to like it better and better – it would be the masterpiece?

それはさておき、この2枚組 LP アルバムを購入したのは先月のこと (なのでリリース直後に買ったことになります)。最初は、まあこんなものかしら、という程度の印象でしたが、聴けば聴く程、このアルバムが素晴らしいものに感じられてきました。もしかしたらこれはとんでもない名盤なのかしら。

    

Brendon ‘Alias’ Whitney is definitely one of the representative artists of Anticon label. Alias’ rapid and beautifully subdevided beats and his own awesome rhyme can be heard on an excellent track 3 “Last Nail”, but the entire mood of this album is set by Rona “Tarsier” Rapadas‘s rich and dulcet voice – both on acoustic, moody tracks with steady pulse, and on dead-fast electric hip-hop tracks – wow, the beauty of this album is so difficult to convey.

I completely agree with the description found on the Anction’s offical website, which says “ . . . Tarsier walks a beautiful line somewhere between Bjork and Beth Gibbons . . . ”. It is so fantastic to listen to the beautiful comparison (as well as the chemistry) of Alias’ pulsive, sensitive, dead-fast, massive Lo-Fi sound productions and Tarsier’s transcendent, smooth voice (which is reminiscent of Bjork singing in English). This album, full of beautiful collaboration, starts with track 1 “Cub” (which sounds as if it takes us beyond an aurora…) surely represents what’s going on now (and beyond!) in the underground hip hop scene. What a beautiful, spiritual and refreshing sound of Track 4 “Dr. C” (the best track IMHO), which would be the best result of acoustic-electro hip hop sound of Alias and Tarsier’s collaboration.

Anticon レーベルを代表するアーティストのひとり Brendon ‘Alias’ Whitney らしい、激しくアップテンポのビートと怒涛のラップは track 3 “Last Nail” 1曲にとどめ、Rona “Tarsier” Rapadas の独特の浮遊感を持ったヴォーカルが、曲によってアコースティックなサウンドと、また別の曲では激しい打ち込みサウンドと、とろける様に中和して独特の世界観を表現しています。オフィシャルサイトでも “ . . . Tarsier walks a beautiful line somewhere between Bjork and Beth Gibbons . . . ” と書かれている通り、ローファイで歪んだ激しいビートとビョークっぽいヴォーカルの対比と融合が見事です。オーロラの彼方へ連れていかれる様な幻想的で美しい track 1 “Cub” で幕をあけるこのアルバムは、文字通り (どちらかというとマイナーでアンダーグラウンドなシーンでの) 現在進行形音楽 (そして更にその先) を垣間見せてくれます。それにしても track 4 “Dr. C” のえも言われぬ美しさはなんでしょうか (個人的にはこの曲がベストトラックだと思います)。Alias と Tarsier の見事なコラボレーションによる、アコースティックでいて同時にエレクトロニックな、形容しがたいヒップホップサウンドとなっています。

The interesting story behind the album is that, (again cited from the official website) “ . . . the project becan with one fluke email and remained faceless for 21 months as they recorded their respective musical roles (without first meeting or even knowing the other) . . . ”. Hmmm, so why could they created such a perfect album?

(再びオフィシャルサイトからの引用ですが) 本アルバムが出来上がるまでには非常に興味深いエピソードがあります。なんと、お互いが何者かも分からない時に、なにげない電子メールの交換からこのプロジェクトが始まり、お互い 3,000マイルも離れた場所を音源が行き交い、21ヶ月かけて完成したというのです。しかもその間、お互いがリアルに顔を合わせることもなかったとのこと。うーむ、それなのになぜこんなに完璧なアルバムが作られるというのでしょう?
