Jazz Impressions of Japan (無言歌) / Jim Hall

We Japanese must deeply thank to the Jim Hall Trio, who left such a great performance on this album (recorded in 1976 during their live tour to Japan). Also, we must be very proud of this country Japan, where Jim Hall had so many impressions which was definitely a fundamental background of this album.

The most famous fact about this album would be direct cutting. Throughout the 1970s, many labels (including the famous Sheffield Lab) released a number of direct-cut LPs. Some Japanese labels also released direct-cut LPs in the decade, with “ultra high fidelity sound” slogan. However, even though such LPs were recorded with premium engineerings, they become merely test LPs for audiophiles, if the musical contents are not good enough.

But this LP, not only contains their great performances but also is one of the highest-ranked LPs among Jim Hall’s all leader albums (of course Mr. Jim Hall is still very active now), I think. All tracks (composed specially for this album) have very impressive harmonies and melodies. Such interesting tracks were played by the trio with much chemistry – probably they played live so many times when touring Japan, then their combination went so close and magical. Such technical improvement as direct-cutting must be just for such great talented album. Actually, we can fully enjoy Jim Hall’s beautiful improvisations and guitar tones with real high-fidelity playback of indescribable beauty.

By the way, this LP was released in 1977, available only in Japan and limited to 30,000 copies only (according to the OBI description) due to the nature of direct-cutting. Fortunately, this session was also recorded on analogue master tapes – in 1980 (when Jim Hall visited again to Japan on tour) “Jazz Impressions of Japan” was reissued using the master tape. Again, the reissue was only available in Japan.

The retail price was changed from 3,300 YEN to 2,500 YEN, and the jacket cover artwork was also changed. The most important difference is the contents – GP-3216 has three extra tracks which was not available on GXU-1. Furthermore, one of the three tracks is the Jim Hall’s masterpiece composition “Careful”! The reissue version has 8 tracks in total, with different song order, but the totality of the entire album is still there – probably because all eight tracks were recorded in a session on the same day.

GXU-1 for the premium high fidelity, GP-3216 for three extra tracks including the killer composition “Careful”. After all, we fans must collect both versions of “Jazz Impressions of Japan”…
